PLEASE NOTE: The Firmware Engineer will be based out of either our Meridan, ID office, or our Orofino, ID factory, depending on the location of the successful candidate.

FIRMWARE ENGINEER: Under the leadership and direction of the Nightforce Electrical Engineering Lead, this position will be involved in the detailed design, development, and testing of next-generation riflescope and accessory firmware for Mil-Spec and Commercial applications. As part of the Engineering team, the Firmware Engineer will have an active role in developing and maintaining C source code for devices related to long-range shooting. The Firmware Engineer will diagnose bugs in existing code, develop and troubleshoot new features, and design protocols for device-to-device communication. The Firmware Engineer will work closely with hardware designers to ensure hardware and firmware design interactions produce an efficient system. This employee will implement low power code using hardware features for battery-driven devices; its design will be interrupt-driven whenever possible and have RTOS support where applicable.


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science
  • Strong familiarity with Bluetooth devices, implementation, and operation (Nordic SDK environment experience a plus)
  • Working knowledge of real-time operating system
  • Comfortable designing intuitive graphical user interfaces
  • Strong C/C++ coding experience
  • Experience in reading schematics and data sheets
  • Strong hardware debugging experience
  • 3+ years of firmware experience for commercial products
  • Must have a good working knowledge of MS Office applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to keep accurate records
  • Must possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Must have a positive attitude and be highly motivated
  • Must have high regard for confidentiality
  • Some travel will be required, as needed

Core Accountabilities

  • Firmware design and development of microcontroller-based products.
  • Create, maintain, and adhere to company coding standards.
  • Organize and conduct code reviews as needed.
  • Help to develop and plan timelines for project completion.
  • Contribute expertise to and learn from the R&D group.
  • Test and validate functionality against feature requirements documentation.
  • Maintain revision control (subversion and git).
  • Create and maintain design and user documentation.
  • Perform system failure analysis on FW-related issues.
  • Implement and maintain bug tracking systems.
  • Assist in production/manufacturing firmware requirements as needed.

Desired skills:

  • Preference will be given for familiarity with long-range shooting and marksmanship.
  • Experience with low-level interfaces such as RS232, SPI, I2C, USB.
  • Low power battery-operated system design experience.
  • Hardware design experience
