Job Description
Salary: $55,000-$70,000 DOE


NextGen Policy (NGP) is currently seeking a full-time (40 hours) Climate Policy Fellow to work in our Sacramento office through Summer 2023 (July). Early career and/or current undergraduate and graduate students in public policy, law, environmental science, planning, or other relevant fields who expect to graduate in Spring 2022 are all encouraged to apply. Applicants with other equivalent qualifications will also be considered. 


  • Pay: The Fellow will receive a salary between the range of $55,000 - $70,000, health benefits, and 401(k) match to support living expenses.
  • Location: The Fellow may work remotely from any California location subject to current NGP work from home policies related to COVID protocols, but will work out of the NGP office in downtown Sacramento thereafter. 
  • Training and Development: The Fellow will work with team members with years of experience in the policy, communications, political, and advocacy fields at the local, national and state government levels.
  • Issue Areas: the Fellow will have the opportunity to work on climate and environmental policy issues including, but not limited to, clean transportation, clean energy, resource extraction and workforce training, climate-aligned state budgeting, environmental justice, sustainable infrastructure, and carbon market design, among others;


  • Assist Senior Policy Advisor for Climate and Clean Energy with all aspects of NGP’s bill, budget, and regulatory work related to the CA State Legislature, Executive Branch agencies, and environmental coalition members.  
  • Be a core member of the growing Climate 100 team, implementing our program to advocate for a 100% climate aligned state budget in California.
  • Develop original research and advocacy positions and materials on pressing climate-related issues in California, or that affect California via federal policy.
  • Assist with special events organized by NGP, attend in-person (when safe to do so) meetings with policymakers and staffers, and possibly travel when required and safe to do so.
  • Assist with drafting and editing internal and external communication materials.
  • Perform administrative support and other duties as needed.

  • Strong desire to obtain new skills and gain exposure to a high functioning  professional working environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to produce high-quality work under tight deadlines.
  • A creative, friendly, and flexible team player.


NextGen Policy offers compensation commensurate with the potential candidate’s experience and competitive with early career positions at public interest non-governmental organizations. Fellows are required to commit to 40 hours per week but reduced hourly commitments may be available to full-time students while courses are in session.
