NLT Management Services has an immediate contractor part-time General Maintenance Worker position available to work in The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives (ATF) Fire Research Laboratory (FRL) located in or around Washington, DC. The ATF – FRL, completed in 2003, is the world’s largest research laboratory that is dedicated to fire scene investigations. FRL scientists utilize its unique structure and sophisticated instrumentation to investigate fire scene phenomena; conduct forensic fire science and engineering tests; and analyze fire growth and dynamics questions.
The FRL conducts investigations that involve fire scene reconstruction; flashover studies; electrical fire cause evaluation; and validation of fire pattern analysis indicators. It also participates in important investigations regarding the impact of accelerants on fire growth and spread, ignition studies and. electrical fire cause analysis.
Responsibilities: Performs general maintenance and repair of equipment and buildings requiring practical skill and knowledge (but not proficiency) in such trades as painting, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and electrical work. Work involves a variety of the following duties: Replacing electrical receptacles, wires, switches, fixtures, and motors; using plaster or compound to patch minor holes and cracks in walls and ceilings; repairing or replacing sinks, water coolers, and toilets; painting structures and equipment; repairing or replacing concrete floors, steps, and sidewalks; replacing damaged paneling and floor tiles; hanging doors and installing door locks; replacing broken window panes; and performing general maintenance on equipment and machinery.
Education/Experience: Learn skills by working of on-the-job as helpers watching and learning from skilled maintenance workers. Several months to one year of on-the-job training is required to become fully qualified. A high school graduated with some course work in woodworking, blueprint reading, science, mathematics and high school shop classes.
Other Qualifications: General Maintenance worker should have mechanical aptitude and the ability to use shop math. Good health is necessary as walking is required. Difficult jobs require problem-solving ability and shall require supervision.
It is preferred that candidates have First Aid/CPR and or firefighting experience. Training as a volunteer or career firefighter in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications or Industrial Fire Brigade training are examples.
Other items: Candidates with a current TS or Secret clearance preferred but not required.
Condition of employment – Candidates MUST be a USA citizen and able to pass a very detailed security background.
