Follows established procedures to assist professional personnel in providing services related to patient care. Provides assistance maintaining organized and efficient operations throughout the department. Interacts and provides support to families and patients in crisis, including disruptive behavior. Works under conditions of interruptions and is subject to time pressures. Provides continuous interaction with patients and families, representing Grayling Hospital to the community. Maintains effective and collaborative working relationships with all members of health care team. Assists the health care team in the delivery of patient care under the supervision/delegation of an RN. Interacts with all departments in the organization. Must demonstrate competency in caring for age specific groups as determined by department scope (see below). The age specific competency requirements are further defined and/or evaluated by unit/department based standards, orientation, on-going education, QI initiatives and evaluation tools.
High school diploma. Advanced education in a health related field preferred. EMT/Paramedic/Pharmacy Technician/Licensed Practical Nurse/Medical Assistant preferred. Must successfully complete competency for department assigned roles and responsibilities. Ability to communicate effectively and work positively with both public and co-workers orally and in writing. Proficient in Windows, Microsoft Office, and email programs. Excellent computer/keyboard skills. Ability to read, write legibly, spell accurately, and perform math functions. BCLS/CPR certification within 3 months of employment.

Ability to perform the duties required without physical restrictions. Must be able to balance, bend, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel, reach, sit, squat, stand, twist, reach above shoulder level, push, pull, and walk (100%) of the time. Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking may occur. Must be able to hear speech, distinguish sounds and odors, and understand and legibly write the English Language. Must have near vision, far vision, depth perception, and be able to distinguish colors. Must be able to position and transfer patients. Must be able to lift objects weighing 35 pounds, such as lifting and transporting patients, equipment, and supplies. Must be able to extricate patients from cars. Will have exposure to communicable diseases including blood/body fluids. Subject to long or irregular hours. On-call responsibilities as determined by department needs.

+ Data Documentation Guidelines:
+ Responsible for obtaining and documenting medication histories using various available resources (patient, patient's family/caregiver, documentation from nursing home, retail pharmacies, mail-order pharmacies, the patient's primary care physician and specialty physicians, and other like sources).
+ Prioritizing which patients will be seen for a medication history if work volume requires. Priority will be given in the following order:
+ Patients likely to be admitted to the hospital.
+ Patients deemed of high need for medication history by the physician.
+ Patients 65 years of age or older.
+ The majority of the Emergency Department patients.
+ Identifies potentially inappropriate medication usage/compliance, communicating to primary nurse and/or provider.
+ Utilizes pharmacy-specific resources and tools to facilitate the review of home medications.
+ Patient care responsibilities/technical tasks as delegated by the RN:
+ Physical care: assists with simple procedures, follows universal precautions.
+ Measurement: performs vital signs, height, weight, head circumference.
+ Nutrition/Intake and Output: assists with feeding, collects urine/stool specimens, weights diapers, measures Foley/NG and wound drainage.
+ Hygiene: bathes patients, changes occupied and unoccupied beds, performs diaper changes and perineal/skin care.
+ Monitoring/Observing: performs safety checks, including restraints and fall precautions.
+ Ambulation/Transportation/Positioning: ambulates, transports, and positions patients with proper body mechanics, utilizing special equipment as necessary.
+ Psychosocial interventions: provides diversional activities, comforts and supports patient/family.
+ Facilitates patient transports as needed.
+ Collects and sends specimens to lab.
+ Performs QC on urine pregnancy and strep tests, and records. Performs patient tests accurately.
+ Provides patient care under the direction of an RN, performing nursing assistant skills as described by unit specific competencies and within the scope of practice define by the State of Michigan for the individual's discipline.
