Job Description

Mori is seeking a highly motivated, collaborative, and hands-on Senior Engineer to lead the Upstream Process Development group. The Senior Engineer will focus on process development and technology transfer from the screening scale to bench and further to our on-site pilot facility. The Senior Engineer will also lead new technology development efforts within the group. This role reports to the VP of Engineering.

  • Independently planning Upstream Engineering projects on multi-month time scales based on company initiatives and ensuring smooth workflow, balancing technical excellence with rapid timelines
  • Supervising, scoping, and drafting study designs across Upstream Engineering with a focus on developing success criteria and project direction
  • Managing Associate level Engineers and Research Associates including reviewing work, providing feedback, and furthering their professional and personal growth
  • Crafting ongoing improvements to documentation, organization, standardization of methods
  • Collaborating with Operations teams including Food Safety/Quality, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing to develop and improve manufacturing processes
  • Generating high quality slide decks to present Upstream development progress and research results
  • Authoring and reviewing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for equipment operation and technology transfer, and facilitating scale up from bench to pilot for new processes
  • Drives initial demonstration of new technology and equipment platforms for Upstream processing
  • Collaborates with others in capital projects during front-end design (URSs, PFDs, M&E Balances), PHAs, design reviews, commissioning, start-up and operator training for future plant builds.


Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (Masters preferred) in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related field with 7+ years of process development experience within food, pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industries
  • Strong technical background in process development, technology transfer, and scale-up in biotech, pharma, or food technology fields
  • Experience with lab and pilot scale stirred tank reactors
  • Experience with protein or biopolymer extraction processing and analysis techniques preferred
  • Management experience in a research environment preferred
  • Experience with equipment design and prototyping
  • Experience using and applying statistical data analysis methods such as design of experiments (DoE), gauge R&R, control charting, and multivariate analysis
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and team building skills
  • Excels in a fast-paced work environment while maintaining a strong level of detail and organization
  • Ability to work flexible and off hours on an as needed basis
  • cGMP compliant process experience in food or pharmaceutical industries preferred
