Job Description

The Assistant Technical Manager is primarily responsible for assisting with the scheduled quality tactical objectives of the lab and generating quality data while meeting and exceeding requested turnaround times. Data generated is used by our customers to assess health and remediation risks in communities throughout the US. The chosen candidate will also aid in the maintenance of a variety of BSL-2 fungal and bacterial stock cultures, participating in continuing education/ proficiency testing to maintain the lab’s accreditation and quality standards, collaborating with the administrative department to ensure timely delivery of projects and special requests, strategizing with the team to improve workflows/ analytical processes, and contributing to the growth plans of the department by researching and validating new and/or untried methods.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

·         Assist the Technical Manager and Quality System Administrator with special projects.

·         Assist in pursuing, receiving, and maintaining necessary laboratory accreditations.

·         Coordinate and manage projects according to turnaround times for timely delivery.

·         Prepare and analyze fungal and bacterial samples from air, water, swabs, and bulks.

·         Analyze all fungal samples with a ≤ 5% margin of error using brightfield microscopy.

·         Ability to read, understand, and follow Standard Operating Procedures.

·         Assist with the maintenance of accreditation under ISO 17025 by adhering to quality assurance and quality control policies and procedures.

·         Accurately transcribes data and distributes reports using LIMS.

·         Thoroughly peer reviews reports before distributing to customers.

·         Performs analyses on reference materials, proficiency samples and other quality control samples daily and/or as scheduled.

·         Provides exceptional customer service and provides technical support as requested in person, via email, or on the phone.

·         Assists co-workers with analytical questions, as necessary.

·         Participates in Lean initiatives and projects when called upon.

·         Follows company policies and procedures and ensures that coworkers are doing the same.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience working in a BSL-2 or 3 laboratory; preferably Microbiology.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Mycology, Biology, Plant Pathology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Ability to research, comprehend, and apply technical methodologies/ analyses and/or present them as potential expansion opportunities for the department.
  • Ability to research, comprehend, and suggest continuous improvements in department workflows and processes.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent teamwork, effective communication, time management, and troubleshooting skills.

·         Ability to sit and focus on details for long periods of time.

  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques and the ability to continuously perform and demonstrate aseptic techniques.
  • Excellent data analytical skills.

·         An aptitude for critical thinking.

·         Willingness to occasionally work long and/or odd hours.

·         Ability to be on call every other weekend and on holidays when scheduled.

 

Desired Qualifications

·         Experience with air samples, surface samples, bacteriology, and mycology.

  • Advanced degree in Microbiology, Biology, Plant Pathology, Environmental Science, or a related field.

·         Experience in other fields of environmental testing or laboratories.

·         Familiarity with ISO 17025-2017 and AIHA.

  • Familiarity with NELAC, FDA, and/or GMP regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of project management.

·         Ability to focus on details for long periods.

·         An aptitude for critical thinking.

·         Experience with air samples, surface samples, bacteriology, and mycology.

·         Experience in other fields of environmental testing or laboratories.

·         Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite.
