Mechanical Engineer

  • Supports engineering and program staff in the analysis, investigation and resolution of engineering problems. Works independently with little supervision.
  • Will work on aerospace, high energy laser, electro-optical and other various systems.
  • Create system specifications, perform systems engineering, define system architecture, and develop requirements.
  • Support development of gimbal systems controlled using feedback from optical and inertial sensors such as IMU’s, gyros, accelerometers, and lasers.
  • Perform and lead mechanical designs including: sizing and selection of hardware for gimbal, heliostat, steering mirror, or similar devices.
  • Create 3D CAD concepts and coordinate detailed design.
  • Perform line of sight jitter analysis.
  • Develop prototype hardware for airborne demonstration.
  • Determines technical objectives and develop innovative, practical solutions to advanced technical engineering problems.
  • Addresses complex and difficult technical issues requiring highly creative approaches, drawing on advanced engineering concepts.
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Hands on work environment and high level of interaction with system components. Oversee prototype builds and implement lessons learned into design.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.


  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
  • Experience in military products and airborne systems and can lead development through design, analysis, and testing from concept through deployment would be preferred.
  • Experience with gimbal design, beam control, and line of sight stabilization is required.
  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Candidate must have experience with design of precision electro-mechanical devices. Exposure to laboratory environment preferred, including hands on experience with relevant systems.
  • Candidate must have familiarity with traditional gimbal electronics, including motors, encoders, resolvers, and amplifiers.
  • Previous experience with optical, flight, or military systems is desired.
  • Experience with CAD, FEA, and Analysis software such as Pro-E/Creo, Solidworks, ANSYS, NASTRAN, SIGFIT, MATLAB, SIMULINK, ZEMAX is desired.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required.
