NURSING HOME PHLEBOTOMIST AND COURIER
SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Nursing Home Phlebotomist and Courier (NHPC) is responsible for organizing the laboratory orders for each nursing home serviced by MDMC and collecting these orders according to an established schedule. This includes organizing phlebotomy supplies, visiting each facility, performing venipuncture of Nursing Home residents, and logging in and distributing specimens upon returning to the laboratory. The NHPC will be responsible for communicating any issues to both nursing home staff and lab management.
- Follows established procedures for performing venipuncture and specimen handling.
- Organizes patient orders, labels, and supplies before leaving for route.
- Follows policies at each facility, such as checking in, wearing a mask, etc.
- Communicates with nursing home staff about the need for assistance or any issues arising during patient draws.
- Properly handles all patient specimens and transports them back to the laboratory.
- Completes log of patients drawn and specimens obtained for each day.
- Checks phlebotomy supply expiration dates monthly at each facility.
- Communicates with facilities management about any issues with or maintenance needs for the courier vehicle.
- Receives specimens into the lab in the EMR and distributes specimens to appropriate areas of the lab for testing.
- Cross trained to assist with inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: 1-3 years previous phlebotomy experience. Experience with geriatric patients preferred.
CREDENTIALS: Holds a certificate from an accredited institution or program for phlebotomy (preferred).
Holds a valid Class E MO Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
PATIENT CONTACT: Must have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, particularly geriatric and patients with behavioral disorders.
PHYSICAL:
STANDING: The position requires prolonged standing and may require frequent repositioning in order effectively obtain specimen.
WALKING: The position requires some walking.
SITTING: Requires prolonged periods of sitting while driving.
LIFTING: Some lifting is required of up to 50 pounds.
VISUAL: Must be able to observe details within a foot of distance.
COMMUNICATION: Ability to clearly exchange information. Direct and personable communication skills are essential.
