VP Insurance Underwriting - Program Manager

This position provides underwriting and operational management leadership of assigned insurance programs in an effort to provide superior products and services to its served markets and customers. This includes continued pursuit and implementation of innovative ways to expand existing programs, and by adding new lines of coverage and other insurance programs.
Responsible for the underwriting and processing of transactions of assigned programs, and for the direction of underwriting staff in the attainment of corporate production and program profit objectives. Position will provide leadership and management in insuring that employees and policy issuance platforms are in compliance with all state insurance regulations associated with admitted and non-admitted forms and rates. Strict oversight will be adhered to as it pertains to carrier underwriting guidelines.
This position also plays a major role in management of MiniCo's relationship with its various program carriers and to insure compliance of all carrier Program Administration Agreement(s).
Work with and support the President - National Programs in the development and implementation of MiniCo’s tactical and strategic plan. Develops and manages the strategy and goals of new and existing insurance programs.
Drives the planning process to achieve annual renewal retention and new business goals within assigned programs. Actively participates in developing program premium and expense budgets and monitors results throughout the planning period.
Assesses emerging marketplace opportunities and threats and identifies needs and opportunities for product development. Proposes new coverages to insurance carriers to enhance program offering. Work with insurance carrier to prepare proper documentation for state insurance filings.
Participates in development and oversight of underwriting procedures, guidelines, best practices, and proposes changes with carrier as needed.
Works with carrier compliance and audit teams to assure procedures are completed accurately and successfully. Assist the insurance carrier in all underwriting audits and subsequently prepare response to audit results.
Work closely with assigned direct reports to implement and audit all underwriting requirements for assigned carriers, including delegation of underwriting authority. Oversees, coordinates, and monitors activities and results of underwriting teams to ensure the electronic policy file management system documentation processes meet regulatory requirements, carrier documentation standards, policy regulatory standards, and all compliance tasks are completed promptly and accurately.
Provides support to legal counsel in providing a response to consumer or state department of insurance complaints
Responsible for the acquisition, retention and development of underwriting talent. Formally manages, guides, mentors, and coaches underwriters in both technical and professional skills. Coordinate with human resources to identify and implement training programs for all underwriting staff.
Fosters relationship management with key Agents and Brokers. Develops underwriter negotiation, communication and general deal making skills. Looks for ways to meet or exceed customer expectations and service quality on a consistent basis.
Helps teams define and achieve common goals; keeps team on track with goals by setting weekly, monthly and annual goals and objectives of individual direct reports and teams. Meets regularly with direct reports to discuss individual and team progress toward achieving goals.
Works with Underwriters to up sell and cross sell coverage enhancements and additional lines of business to existing accounts and to support the marketing of company specific products and programs.
Develop and utilize management reports and analytics tools to assist in monitoring program, teams, and individual underwriter results.
Monitor loss ratios and develop appropriate controls and guidelines to assist in managing the profitability of the programs.
Evaluate program actuarial results and negotiate with carrier corrective action; monitor premium and rate variance and report to carriers in format as requested. Monitor and manage carrier aggregate by state and county. Participate in state pricing reviews, budget planning and territory reviews.
Manage product application compliance and revisions. Monitor policy issuance platform bugs, fixes and enhancements and provide guidance to the IT department regarding mission critical priorities.
Effectively manages internal underwriting workflows and systems as well as providing oversight of third party companies contracted to provide support of underwriting tasks.
Manage schedules of remote and on-site employees. Maintain administrative records and administer the following for direct reports: performance reviews, salary reviews and attendance records.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NEEDED:
Minimum of 7 years Commercial Lines Underwriting
Minimum 5 years Commercial Line underwriting team supervisory experience
3 years of non-admitted Commercial Underwriting preferred
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
High level of technology literacy related to policy issuance platforms and report creation
Demonstrates high personal and professional standards.
CPCU, CIC designation preferred
Bachelor’s degree in business preferred
