Job Description

The Controller will report to the Chief Executive Officer and assume a key role in the overall management, growth, and strategic direction of a privately-owned diversified real estate and construction company based in Toledo, Ohio (“Company”). The Controller will have primary day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, managing, and controlling financial-related activities of the Company, including accounting, treasury, and financial planning and analysis.  He or she will assist in crafting corporate strategy and long-range business plans and will assume the leadership role for the accounting and finance functions of the Company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Manage the Company’s finance and accounting operations, including internal and external department staff and service providers, and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls

·         Work with other areas of the Company relating to acquisitions, construction, brokerage, and property management to provide strategic financial advice and insights into financial returns, forecasts, budgets, variances, and controls

  •  Develop the financial and tax strategies of the Company and its affiliated entities
  • Manage financial reporting to management, including preparation and oversight of monthly financial statements for the Company and its affiliated entities
  •   Manage the long and short-term cash position and requirements of the Company and its affiliated entities
  • Develop a tax-efficient and optimal structure for affiliated companies and real estate investments and projects
  • Help to secure equity and debt financing for real estate investments and development projects, along with managing investor and banking relationships
  • Analyze the equity position, use of equity, and capital needs of the Company and its affiliated entities
  • Provide ongoing project-by-project return analysis, including cash flow projections and return on investment calculations for the Company, its affiliated entities, and investors. Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures
  • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls
  • Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits; providing information to and external auditors. Coordinate all audit activity.
  • Maximizes return, and limits risk, on cash by minimizing bank balances; making investments
  • Prepares budgets by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans
  • Achieves budget objectives by scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions
  • Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data
  • Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actions
  • Ensures operation of equipment by establishing preventive maintenance requirements and service contracts; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques
  • Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results
  • Maintains financial staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employee
  • Maintains financial staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies
  • Protects operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed


  • Valid CPA Status
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in accounting/finance
  • Strong understanding of tax codes and laws
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with Quickbooks accounting software
  • Intermediate/Advanced knowledge of Mircosoft Excel
  • Ability to work in a team environment
