Are you ready to help Midwest Transplant Network (MTN), the Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) serving a population of 5.5 million in Kansas and Missouri, achieve our mission of saving lives by joining our team? MTN is actively seeking an individual to assume the position of Organ Referral Specialist. This is a full time position based out of the Westwood, KS office. The Organ Referral Specialist is responsible for handling organ referrals from referring hospitals, facilitating organ allocation (kidneys & pancreas), receiving organ import offers and maintaining communication between the organ procurement team, hospitals, transplant centers, professional colleagues and the general public. We are currently looking to hire the weekday night (11pm-7:30am) and the weekday evening (3pm-11:30pm) shift.


  1. Screens organ referral calls from referring hospitals to evaluate potential donors, answer questions, and develop a plan for action with the Administrator on Call (AOC), the Family Services Coordinator (FSC) and the Organ Procurement Transplant Coordinator (OPTC).
  2. Collaborates with the AOC to determine a plan of action for following potential donor cases, deferral of non-eligible donor referrals or activation of the Family Services Coordinator for offering potential donor families the option of donation in an appropriate and sensitive manner.
  3. Collaborates with the OPTC Staff to facilitate communications regarding organ/tissue suitability.
  4. Facilitates all aspects of kidney and/or pancreas allocation in coordination with MTN laboratory, OPTC and Administrator On-Call.
  5. Facilitates the import of organs from outside the MTN service area, communicates with the accepting local transplant surgeon, MTN laboratory, and confirms transportation of the imported organ to the appropriate transplant center.
  6. Maintains Electronic Medical Record (EMR) access in MTN hospitals to assist with obtaining additional information to determine donor suitability for both organ and tissue potential donors.
  7. Serve as a clinical resource in the Donation Services Department (DSD) to evaluate potential tissue donors.
  8. Serves in a back-up capacity to offer organ donation by phone in extreme situations when timing requires immediate action to prevent loss of opportunity to offer donation to the next-of-kin.
  9. Conducts work in compliance with established federal and state laws, AOPO and AATB standards, UNOS and FDA guidelines, CDC and MTN policies.


  1. RN, NREMT-P, RT or Bachelor’s degree required. Three or more years’ clinical work experience in a critical care/emergency room setting strongly preferred.
  2. Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  3. Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively; good problem-solving and creative thinking skills and well-developed personal stress management skills.
  4. Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to speak and communicate clearly and accurately to convey information to MTN stakeholders in person or by phone; written documentation of relevant information in a professional manner.
  5. Ability to lift 50 pounds and transfer short distances.
  6. Possess manual dexterity sufficient to operate telephones, computers and surgical equipment.
  7. Ability to hear at normal audio levels of speaking whether in person or over the phone.
  8. Vision correctable to 20/40 to read patient charts.
  9. Must maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with MTN motor vehicle policy. Must have reliable personal automobile transportation to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines. Must be able to travel within the service area by ground or air.
