Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Mid-Atlantic Permanente Research Institute (MAPRI) Research Biostatistician position provides analytic support and acts as a strategic partner on various types of research projects involving clinical data.

 

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates and acts as a strategic partner with investigators in developing analytical plans for research and other projects including database design, program design, selection of statistical methods, creation of project timelines, and development of formats for presenting results to meet customer needs
  • Conducts statistical analysis for research and evaluation projects including preparation and cleaning of data, implementation and refinement of statistical methods preparation of formatted tables of results, creation of databases and other outputs, verification of the accuracy of results, and assumption of primary responsibility for the analysis and presentation of project data
  • Participates in quality assurance processes and reviews code output, tables, and charts
  • Presents analytical results orally and in writing to audiences, with and without formal statistical training, incorporating descriptions of methods, relevant literature, and other background material to provide context for the results
  • Estimates the optimal sample size for the desired power, recognizing cost of patient accrual and resource limitation for selected studies
  • Consistently supports compliance and the Principles of Responsibility (MAPMG’s Code of Conduct) by maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the organization, acting with ethics and integrity, reporting non-compliance, and adhering to applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations, accreditation and licensor requirements and MAPMG’s policies and procedures
  • Takes a lead role in defining and building analytic variables for research projects
  • Partners with project team and clients in the determination of goals, priorities, and decision making
  • Leads efforts in researching, recommending, and implementing methods to validate, troubleshoot, and interpret results
  • Provides technical and data leadership to high visibility projects
  • Takes a lead role in analyzing and implementing data management, quality control, and reporting needs on multiple research studies and determines a range of solutions and options
  • Serves as a data resource for research project teams and interacts directly with clients and investigators
  • Acts as partner in identifying of key areas and priorities for focus based on data analysis
  • Oversees, leads, and consults on all phases of SAS/SQL/analytical programming, data management, macros, quality control and reporting of research data
  • Identifies and resolves analytic problems using knowledge, background, troubleshooting techniques, and problem-solving skills
  • Translates needs, issues and ideas into effective strategies and action plans
  • Formulates specific implementation plans and evaluates the effectiveness of actions and programs implemented
  • Tests data conversions and data integrity from a wide variety of sources across multiple platforms
  • Participates in multi-site projects by developing, writing, testing, running of sophisticated code to be distributed by programmers at multiple sites
  • Maintains data integrity

 

Qualifications

  • Masters or PhD degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Public Health, Informatics, or a related field of study with at least one year of coursework in statistics or biostatistics; PhD degree is preferred
  • Four (4) to six (6) years of healthcare and/or health research experience is required
  • Minimum five (5) to seven (7) years of experience with SAS, Stata, R or other statistical packages
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience, depending on degree, of advanced data analysis experience and analyzing research data using statistical packages
  • Familiarity and experience organizing and manipulating large data sets using SQL programming language
  • Familiarity and experience with a broad range of statistical methods and approaches including longitudinal/hierarchical analysis, competing risk and marginal structural models preferred
  • Expert ability to identify and resolve problems using knowledge, background, problem solving and troubleshooting skills across platforms
  • Ability to express complex statistical concepts and technical information to audiences with and without formal statistical training
  • Independently able to perform analysis, programming, implementation and testing of data; accountable to meet tight deadlines and complete complex work assignments
  • Ability to estimate required sample sizes for internally and externally funded research projects
  • Ability to communicate complex analysis results and contribute significantly to decision making
  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships, work collaboratively as part of a research team, and be an independent self-starter
  • Strong foundation in applied statistics
  • Strong analytical critical thinking, writing, communication, and consulting skills
  • Knowledge of statistical and research methodology
