Chemical Dependency Aide

The Chemical Dependency Aide (CDA) assists nurses with admissions and discharge of patients, to include patients withdrawing from alcohol and/or drugs. The incumbent monitors patient actions and behaviors, takes vital signs and transports patients, as required. The CDA performs general housekeeping duties. The Chemical Dependency Aide coordinates with the Clinical Supervisor, patients, co-workers, the nurse as lead Shift Supervisor, Emergency Medical Services and Auxiliary Staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lift or assist in lifting an adult, as required.
  • Lift and/or carry food and supplies, as required.
  • Answer telephone and complete telephone screening forms and report information to Nurse.
  • Perform non-medical intake on incoming patients.
  • Log and store patient’s personal belongings.
  • Take and record vital signs per protocol.
  • Perform Alco meter testing upon admittance to sobering.
  • Distribute supplies to patients.
  • Prepare and serve meals and beverages, as required.
  • Monitor patient intake of food and liquids.
  • Monitor activities and behaviors of patients.
  • Report patient behavior to Nurse.
  • Assist Nurse with patient in an emergency, as directed.
  • Inventory supplies.
  • Arrange, store and stock supplies.
  • Coordinate with Nurse for discharge of patients.
  • Remove bedding, clean linen, sanitize and make bed.
  • Wash, dry, fold and store laundry.
  • Clean bathroom, showers, tubs, sinks and toilets.
  • Sweep and mop file room floors.
  • Vacuum all carpeted areas.
  • Wash windows, as required.
  • Clean lobby and reception areas, as required.
  • Empty garbage cans in patient rooms and in other units, as required.
  • Transport food and supplies, as required.
  • Make rounds at beginning and end of each assigned shift with on-coming and off-going Aide.
  • Consult with Nurse on duty as needed and follow protocols.

Minimum Qualifications:

One (1) year experience in mental health or in the medical health care field or, One (1)year of education or training in alcohol and drug treatment, or One (1) year experience in a substance abuse inpatient treatment facility, or One (1) year combination of experience and training which demonstrates ability to successfully perform the duties of this job. Must manually lift or assist in lifting an adult, following proper lifting requirements.

  • Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Provide and maintain on file a current First Aid Card, CPR Card, and Food and Beverage Handler’s Card
  • Successfully pass a criminal history background check.
  • Must have a valid/current Washington State Driver’s License and provide proof of auto insurance.
  • Must be insurable by agency’s insurance carrier in order to drive agency owned vehicles or when driving private vehicle for work.
  • Knowledge of substance abuse and substance abuse treatment.Use computer and computer programs to include Word, Excel and Access.
  • Knowledge of and ability to take and record vital signs.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and staff.
  • Write legibly and communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms.
  • Record concise and accurate information in medical log.
  • Work with potentially difficult patients.
  • Work independently or as a team member, as required.
  • Exercise sound judgment.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be able to successfully pass MDC’s physical intervention training within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be able to successfully re-certify in MDC’s physical intervention training on an annual basis.
