Metis Technology Solutions is seeking aerospace engineers with approximately 5+ years of experience in orbital mechanics, with a focus on practical applications of low thrust trajectory optimization.

Job Description

This position is for an analyst in orbital mechanics, trajectory optimization, and mission design. Metis supports our customers’ work on missions ranging from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to interplanetary trajectories, with current needs focused on low thrust trajectory optimization.

Work assignments primarily relate to the formal engineering process, including requirements definition, analysis, trade studies, tools development, design, and documentation of results in formats such as reports, presentations, and proposals.

Tasks will include use of industry standard simulation tools such as STK/Astrogator, GMAT, Copernicus, MALTO or equivalent, often augmented with custom analysis programs.

Technical areas of interest currently include:

- Low thrust trajectory design

- CubeSat applications for science missions

- Low thrust mission operations

- Orbit Determination (aka Nav or orbit estimation)

- Space mission design

Working both independently and in teams, the engineer will:

- Be responsible for technical analyses in support of space mission projects

- Develop software code for analysis, such as Monte Carlo analyses or parametric studies

- Collaborate with analysts in orbital mechanics and in other engineering disciplines in space mission design

- Deliver results as technical output, reports, presentations, and engineering products such as requirements, risks, or procedures

Skills & Qualifications

The position seeks candidates with coursework and/or work experience in low thrust trajectory design. Relevant Master’s degree in engineering preferred; Bachelor’s degree in engineering may be sufficient with appropriate work experience.

Specialized experience is beneficial in the areas of SmallSats or CubeSats, low thrust, mission operations, orbit determination, and trajectory design. We work on concepts for flight missions so the emphasis is on practical applications, rather than theoretical research. Familiarity with NASA mission project life cycle is a plus.

Approximate level of experience will be about 5 years of professional work. It is expected that the scope of responsibilities will increase with the number of years’ experience, from closely supervised for a less experienced analyst, to carrying independent responsibility for complex results for those with greater experience.

In this position, the analyst must be able to:

- Support requirements definition and management from the mission and project goals

- Perform trade studies on trajectory and orbit design options

- Address real-world practical aspects of space mission design

- Organize analysis methods and results for iterative design cycles

- Participate in collaborative design processes for spacecraft and space missions

- Use industry standard tools such as STK/Astrogator or GMAT, and especially Copernicus, MALTO, or similar low thrust tools.

- Write procedural algorithms, for example in programming languages such as Matlab, Python, VBA, C++

- Meet teamwork responsibilities such as timely delivery of results, collaboration with multiple disciplines, design process with configuration management, onsite attendance at meetings

- Communicate results in speaking and writing to collaborators or stakeholders who may be unfamiliar with the specialized discipline of orbital mechanics.
