Lab Technician Job Description

This position reports to: MLAB Executive Director

These people report to this position: N/A

Internally, this position teams with: Lab Technicians and Mobile Phlebotomists

Externally, this position interacts with: MLAB patients, Referral Providers

Job Purpose

The medical lab technician is responsible for preparing samples for analysis, monitoring tests and procedures, and analyzing the chemical content of fluids.

Overview

General Duties

  • Keeps laboratory supplies ready by inventorying stock
  • Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, calling for repairs
  • Documents information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books
  • Resolves problems by examining and evaluating data and selecting corrective steps
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading technical publications
  • Sets up and operates laboratory equipment in preparation for specimen examinations
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and supplies by cleaning and maintaining quality assurance records
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary work area in accordance with standard laboratory practice and procedures
  • Collect blood samples from patients
  • Practice proper patient identification techniques
  • Label vials with patient names and dates
  • Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient
  • Transport all specimen samples accordingly
  • Centrifuge blood samples
  • Expect to work with a large number of patients varying in age and health status
  • Be friendly, courteous and sympathetic when it comes to working with patients
  • Keep company vehicle cleaned and maintenance up to date

Pay, Benefits and Expectations

  • The position is offered with negotiable compensation and scheduling options
    • 30-minute lunch period for all working shifts
  • Benefits available after probationary 90-day period from date of hire:
    • Optional Dental, Vision and Medical Coverage and Life Insurance Policy
    • PTO accrual and use with 2-week notice provided for requests off
    • Performance review at 90 days and annually thereafter

Physical Demands

  • Expected travel is 20% or more
    • Travel as mobile phlebotomist ocassionally required
    • May be asked to travel to satellite offices 1 day/week
  • Must be able to stand for up to 10 hours
  • Must be able to lift greater than 30 lbs

Qualifications

Education

  • Minimum 1 year experience running lab samples (strongly preferred)
  • High school diploma or equivalent, as well as Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency
  • Completion of an approved phlebotomy training course
  • Current CPR certification and First Aid certification (preferred)

Other

  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record
    • A reliable form of transportation

Knowledge, Skills and Characteristics

  • Must be well-organized, open-minded, and flexible
  • He/she must be able to communicate well with others, work as a team, and lead others by example and direction
  • Excellent written and oral skills are necessary and applicant must have professional phone and in-person etiquette
  • Strong computer skills and EHR experience required
  • Ability to multi-task and remain organized and positive throughout is a requirement
  • Applicant must be customer service focused and have a strong attention to detail and positive, upbeat personality
  • Must possess a high degree of professionalism, including keeping Protected Health Information confidential
