Job Description

Job Title: Buyer

Department: Supply Chain

Reports to:  Director

The ideal candidate will possess and live by Mercer Foods core values.

SIGN ON BONUS OF $1,000 paid out at 90 days.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:  Coordinates and procures materials necessary to support production plans.  Confirms appropriate production requirements are being met though specifications and vendor qualification compliance. Works with the operations and sales team to maintain effective relationships. Create, analyze, and always maintain appropriate production materials. Generate and monitor purchase orders and contracts for accuracy and timely delivery. Negotiate pricing with suppliers and research/source new suppliers. Participate in plant audits. Work with operations team to inspect quality of products upon arrival. Manage and maintain product specifications and descriptions in cooperation with R&D and QA. Assist team members with various projects/tasks. Perform extensive market research on supplies and vendors. Provide regular reviews to suppliers and Identify positive financial outcomes to improve the value chain. Support R&D in the development of new products with samples and product knowledge.

SKILLS:    

Accuracy            Ensure vendor invoices are three way matched with correct purchase orders and receiving documents.  When there is no purchase order, ensure the correct general ledger account coding is used, and proper approvals are obtained.

Communication            Possesses strong communication skills and can explain complex concepts in ways everyone can understand. Is often seen as having strong interpersonal skills.

Continuous Improvement        Design, roadmap and continuous process/control improvement plans, leading implementation of both, including application/system change management for increased efficiency and effectiveness of processes or data.

Critical Thinking            Forms good judgement when evaluating situations and reacting accordingly.

Documentation            Maintain proper documentation and records.

Forecasting            Monitor and manage short term cash needs by preparing weekly cash requirements and short-term cash forecasting.

PO Creation            Generate and monitor purchase orders and contracts.

Supply and Demand        Partner with all teams to balance supply and demand. Continually achieve focus, alignment, and synchronization among all functions of the organization. 

System Management        Manage data systems, to include developing and monitoring data entry, maintenance, tracking, reporting, and output.

REQUIREMENTS:  Requires a bachelor's degree or at least 3 years of experience in a similar role and field. Experience in food or beverage industry with specific requirements to manage supplier approvals and specifications adherence. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Thorough working knowledge of purchasing policies, processes, and procedures. Understanding of warehouse and inventory control policies and procedures. Extensive knowledge of material work planning and methods engineering processes and procedures. Ability to negotiate best vendor terms, pricing and delivery based on specific budget and schedule requirements. Complete knowledge of all related skill area software and equipment.

FOOD SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:  

•    Place high priority on food safety, quality, and sanitation by understanding and executing Mercer Food’s food safety and sanitation policies and procedures.

•    Hold self and others accountable to Mercer Foods food safety & sanitation guidelines and policies by communicating any food safety incident, observation, or opportunity to your leadership team or teammates. 

•    In the absence of Director of Procurement, serves as back up to ensure all food safety, quality objectives and SQF system requirements are met.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands:  some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and frequent fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires the following percentages of time committed to physical activity:  70% or more sitting, 20% or more walking, and 20% or more standing. The job is performed under some temperature variations and in a food manufacturing  office environment. Unrestricted visual and audio abilities are required for the safety of all employees. The ability to lift to 40 lbs. is required.
