Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY 

BILINGUAL IN SPANISH, REQUIRED!

Provides high quality nursing care to patients in the ambulatory health care setting. Safely performs a range of routine clinical skills which include assisting with office procedures, obtaining urine specimens, taking vital signs, phlebotomy, telephone screening, making patient appointments, and other routine office practice functions. Performance of these duties is supervised by licensed nursing personnel and the physician group.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Functions in an accurate and efficient manner to provide for safe and high quality patient care: -34% (30% w/goals)

a. Prepares patient for examination by physician

b. Obtains accurate vital signs and recognizes variances from normal

c. Obtains basic health information, medical history, etc.

d. Performs EKGs as ordered by physician

e. Prepares urine specimens for microscopic exam according to procedures

f. Performs laboratory procedures as ordered by physician:

Guaiac stool card testing, venipuncture for laboratory tests, blood sugar testing, etc.

g. Performs urine control testing according to established protocols and submits documentation to DNA laboratory.

h. Administers injections/medications as ordered by physician

i. Performs TB skin testing according to established protocol

j. Provides adequate documentation for office procedures performed on patient during office visit

k. Reviews medications with patients for physician information

l. Informs supervising licensed nursing staff of any problems associated with patients that require additional intervention, etc.

 

2. Performs necessary duties required for the efficient operation of office practice: -16% (14% w/goals)

a. Reviews laboratory reports, diagnostic test reports, consult reports, etc., and ascertains that physician receives and reviews documents

b. Handles telephone calls from patients/family members in a courteous, informative manner. Relays messages to physician as appropriate. Provide follow-up to patients/family members as necessary

c. Coordinates prescription refills according to direction from attending physician and in compliance with established office practice protocols

d. Documents appropriate information in medical records clearly and accurately according to procedures.

f. Identifies patient’s need for education, additional information, etc., and seeks assistance as necessary.

g. Follows infection control policies and procedures

h. Obtains insurance approval for clinical/diagnostic testing as necessary

 

3. Participates as a team member of the office practice facilitating a pleasant, cohesive atmosphere for staff, patients, physicians, etc. –12% (10% w/goals)

a. Maintains a constant awareness of policies and procedures approved for office practice

b. Effectively communicates on the phone and face-to-face by being courteous, prompt, and polite

c. Demonstrates problem-solving abilities, requesting assistance from supervisory staff as necessary

d. Provides back up to the front office representative and is familiar with responsibilities of that position.

e. Attends staff meetings regularly

f. Ability/knowledge of computer programs in order to accomplish necessary procedures

g. Maintains clean, neat, orderly, stocked lab area, exam rooms, and office area

h. Orders medical supplies, medications, etc. as necessary

I. Maintains supply of medication samples in an organized manner

j. Maintains appropriate logs for Procrit

k. Maintains appropriate logs for medication samples

l. Ensures that patients and family members are always treated with courtesy and sensitivity. Make appropriate explanations to them when necessary if physicians are late for appointment, etc.

m. Participates in Total Quality Improvement program

n. Participates in training of new staff

o. Special projects as assigned by management staff

QUALIFICATIONS (Training, License, Certification, Degree and/or Experience)

Current Texas State Licensure. CPR certification. 3+ years med/surg, physician office practice, or outpatient clinic experience. Basic computer knowledge preferred.
