  • Job Summary
    • Provides clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory setting under the supervision of a physician. Duties may include documentation of vital signs and assisting providers with patient exams. Provides office nursing support to assure high quality care and service to patients.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education/Training
      • High School Diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.

    • Experience
      • Cardiology experience preferred; experience using a practice management system.
    •  
    • License/Certification/Registration
      • CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) by American Association of Medical Assistants orRMA (Registered Medical Assistant) through American Medical Technologists required within 6 months ofhire. CPR certification. ACLS preferred.

    • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
      • Clinical competency as verified annually. Excellent customer service/ patient interaction skills.Effective communication skills; personal computer skills; effective problem-solving skills; ability to type at least35 words per minute; ability to work in fast paced environment with changing priorities and frequentinterruptions; ability to respond to a patient crisis or code emergency in a calm, professional manner; ability towork with multiple physician/staff personalities.
  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Actively participates in the direct delivery of patient care which can include performing exercise tolerance testing set-up, cardiac monitor study hook-ups, home sleep testing, endovenous ablation set-up, and port removals to render appropriate clinical support to the physician.
    • Assists in coordinating patient care with clinical staff by reviewing the patient schedule to ensure appropriate support is available at the appointed times.
    • Assists physician in emergent events by being familiar with appropriate locations of emergency equipmentand following physician instructions to render appropriate clinical support to the physician.
    • Assists physicians with patient preparation for examination and with the examination and education of patients.
    • Attends all scheduled meetings including, but not limited to, regular staff meetings and training classes forsafety, infection control, OSHA, CPR and others as required.
    • Completes patient assessment by identifying chief complaint, obtaining Review of Systems, updating medication list, completing vital signs, accurate documentation in Electronic Health record, performing ECGs when required to render appropriate clinical support to the physicians and mid-level providers.
    • Conducts surveillance for transitions of care, emergent care or follow up tasks such as retrieval of documents associated with referrals/testing.
    • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
    • Demonstrates behavior consistent with MedStar Health mission, vision, goals, objectives and patient care philosophy.
    • Documents clinically related activities accurately in the electronic medical record.
    • Follows physician orders by coordinating subsequent services to render appropriate clinical support to the physicians and mid-level providers.
    • Interacts with patients, physicians and staff by obtaining and communicating essential data and assisting other team members to coordinate the effective transmission of patient related information.
    • Orders medical and office supplies by contacting approved vendors to maintain appropriate inventory levels. Provides patient education and instructions by answering patient questions in order to properly educate and orient patients. Cleans, stocks and maintains equipment and prepares exam rooms for patients.
    • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Serves as back-up for other staff where needed or requested.
    • Verifies, confirms, and submits pharmacy refill requests by following office policies, to include e-prescribing, to ensure accurate and timely drug therapy. Completes pre-authorization of medication.
