Visitor Experience Associate

(Part-time, non-exempt)

Reports to: Visitor Services Manager

Job Overview

The Mattress Factory’s Visitor Services Department is seeking applications for a part-time Visitor Experience Associate (VEA) who is reliable, professional, flexible and outgoing. The VEA is responsible for greeting visitors, selling admission tickets and memberships, monitoring artwork in the galleries, as well as providing information on programs, events and general information. VEA’s work both Saturdays and Sundays. Weekday hours are a possibility based on scheduling needs.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Operate a cash register through the Point of Sale system (Square)
    • Open and close cash drawers and maintain an accurate cash drawer throughout each shift
    • Sell admission tickets, actively promote and sell museum memberships to reach monthly revenue goals and sell merchandise from the museum shop

· Provide general information about the museum and its exhibitions, The MF Café, The MF Shop, facility rentals, upcoming events and education programming

· Stay attuned to the visitor experience; actively engaging with visitors to answer questions all while creating positive, meaningful connections and fulfilling experiences for guests

· Monitor galleries, making note of any maintenance needed

· Maintain a clean and organized work station and working environment

· Use decision-making skills to determine best solutions or actions for service recovery

· Document and record visitor complaints or opportunities to improve the visitor experience and proactively submit to supervisor

· Answer telephone and respond to visitor inquires relative to visitor operations or visiting the museum (general info, directions, operating hours, policies, procedures and restrictions)

· Ensure buildings are ready to receive visitors; during times of inclement weather this includes snow removal and shoveling as necessary; maintaining clean and stocked bathrooms in all buildings; trash removal from all buildings

· Maintain accurate attendance records through spreadsheets or forms

· Check-in members using the museum’s database management system

· Develop a working knowledge of the museum’s permanent collection and rotating exhibitions

· Troubleshoot; includes addressing emergency situations and following protocol and procedures

· Attend and actively participate in monthly Visitor Services meetings with supervisor and front of house team

· Perform additional visitor operations or admission related work as required


  • Highschool diploma or equivalent
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • 1 – 3 years’ experience in the following:
    • Working as part of a visitor services team in a museum setting or similar cultural institution with a focus on customer service related work
    • Operating a cash drawer and following best cash handling practices
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at one time and remain composed during peak volume periods
  • Enjoys working with the public, meeting new people and working with volunteers
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule, including holidays and evening events

· Ability to lift a minimum of 20lbs and stand for long periods of time
