Role summary:

The Senior Microbiologist role is responsible for the scheduling, execution, and data analysis of research/non-routine testing projects related to Food Microbiology, including Quality and Safety.   Additionally, the role will be responsible for designing and drafting study proposals and reports in collaboration with the Senior Manager, Research.

  • Execute and monitor Microbiology Research activities from project design and initiation through closing, in collaboration with the Senior Manager, Research, including without limitation: 
    • Develop costing and proposals for projects in a manner that is consistent with     corporate processes.
    • Develop plans and schedules for project execution that meet client needs, make optimal use of staffing consistent with costing and proposals.
    • Oversee and participate in the execution of projects, performing method analysis as     required.
    • Ensure that record keeping as well as Quality Assurance and Quality Control practices and policies are adhered to and report on any deviations according to corporate policy.  
    • Develop and maintain SOPs and Work Instructions applicable to Research services in collaboration with the Senior Manager, Research.
    • Ensure drafting and execution of proposals, data analysis, interim and final reports.
  • Identify, document, communicate and respond to any non-conformities with instrumentation, samples and methodologies or deviations from plan or policy, relaying updates to the Senior Manager, Research.  Identify and implement troubleshooting activities, assessment of root cause and corrective actions as applicable.  
  • Other duties may be assigned to assist with the operations of the lab, location and/or client advisory needs.
  • Follow written Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions.
  • Participate in review and revision of applicable Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions in collaboration with the Senior Manager, Research.  
  • Monitor supply levels and order consumables as needed for projects.

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5-8 years of direct experience in microbiology or closely related field.
  • Masters or post-graduate degree with 3-5 years relevant experience (preferably in microbiology, food R&D, or closely related field). 
  • Industry experience preferred (e.g., food R&D)
  • Knowledge of microbiological test methodologies.
  • Work experience with project planning.
  • Ability to distinguish colors as required for Microbiology testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team.
  • Positive outlook with the ability to adapt to a changing environment.
