Behavioral Health Therapist

Maniilaq Counseling and Recovery Center, a tribal health organization meeting the needs of the Inupiaq people in Alaska, has a unique position available to the right clinician.  By becoming an Itinerant Therapist, you can work in remote Alaskan villages in and around the Northwest Arctic Borough, by delivering mental health and substance use counseling to largely Native Alaskan populations.  The Maniilaq service area is surrounded by national parks and preserves. It is known for its vast expanses of tundra and wilderness where, to this day, Inupiaq people still practice a subsistence way of life.  Maniilaq Itinerant Therapists are part of a team that is based above the Arctic Circle and they carry a case load in multiple villages including opportunities to fly by bush plane into the smaller communities not accessed by roads. The position includes extensive benefits and paid time off. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Provides individual, family, and group, mental health and substance use treatment. 

·         Provides crisis intervention services, assessments and referrals.

·         Makes clinical decisions regarding the welfare of patients, including suicide assessments, higher levels of care and treatment planning.

·         Travels to villages to provide mental health and substance use services.

·         Works within the community and the Maniilaq Health umbrella to provide consultations to medical staff, police, schools, and other professionals and agencies when appropriate.

·         Builds community engagement through internal and external organizations.

·         Maintains confidentiality of patient records and treatment and properly documents all interactions.

·         Works as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide culturally competent services to all clients.  

·         Participates in the on-call rotation.

 

 

Itinerant Therapist I:

  • A Master’s degree in Social Work, Professional Counseling, Psychology, Substance Use and Addiction, Family and Marital Therapy, or related field.  Master’s degrees must be an eligible Master’s for an Alaska State licensure or credential at the time of hire. If the candidate does not have a license eligible Master’s degree but has obtained a Doctoral degree that is eligible for an Alaska State Licensure, the Doctoral degree will be accepted as equivalent.
  • Must be able to obtain an LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or LAP within 2 years.
  • Ability to work with sensitivity in a cross-cultural environment. Ability to adjust to “bush” conditions in Arctic Alaska.
  • Must be willing and able to travel in small planes.

 

Itinerant Therapist II:

  • Has met all minimum qualifications for Itinerant Therapist I.
  • In addition has obtained at least a Master’s Level professional mental health license in Alaska. Examples of qualifying Master’s level licenses include Licensed Professional Counselor (under AS 08.63) and Marital and Family Therapy (under 08.29). Other qualifying Master’s level licensures are (1) Licensure as a Psychological Associate or (2) Licensure as a Master of Social Work. Candidates with qualifying Master’s level licensures will still be required to obtain their terminal Licensure (LAP, or LCSW) within two years.

 

All Itinerant Therapist are required to obtain an Alaska Chemical Dependency Counselor (CDC) certification (or national equivalent) within 2 years of hire. Upon proof of certification, therapist will receive compensation increase of 2 steps (if completed within the 2 year deadline.)

Kotzebue is located 549 air miles northwest of Anchorage and is 33 miles above the Arctic Circle. There are no highway systems that connect the region with the rest of the state, however Kotzebue’s Ralph Wein Memorial Airport supports daily jet service to Anchorage and Nome as well as smaller bush planes to the 11 surrounding communities.
