Industrial/Electrical Controls Technician

This position is responsible for effectively maintaining production equipment at the MSA facility in Cranberry Twp., PA. The plant manufactures permanent and portable gas detection devices, Thermal Imaging Cameras (TIC), Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBA) and sensor assemblies. In this role, technicians with a strong electro-mechanical background must have the ambition to supplement current knowledge/skills and progress to equipment subject matter experts.   • Practice behavior based safety (BBS) principles to maintain a safe workplace
  • Complete planned and unplanned equipment maintenance activities
    • PLC based automated motion equipment, robotic soldering and welding, precision lasers, environmental chambers
    • SMT placement equipment, conveyors, reflow ovens, conformal coating, low pressure molding, PCBA testers
  • Coordinate maintenance activities requiring manufacturer resources
  • Document activities and maintain equipment preventive maintenance database
  • Manage equipment spare parts inventories and replace in a timely manner
  • Mentor peer technicians in areas of subject matter expertise
  • Ability to work a steady shift with flex time as well as short duration travel for training

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Perform equipment lockout/tag-out activities to safely de-energize equipment in accordance with plant program
  • Prioritize, organize and schedule multiple project tasks (equipment, tools, materials) with tight deadlines
  • Standard knowledge of product specifications, quality requirements, production goals, efficiency and waste
  • Read and interpret equipment schematics and manuals
  • Fundamental knowledge of electrical theory and principles of operation
  • Demonstrate superior troubleshooting and diagnostic skills to identify root cause and resolution of equipment issues
  • Ability to diagnose and repair machine control problems utilizing the machine’s programmable logic controllers (PLC) program
  • Install, troubleshoot and repair electric motor controls/components (servo drives, VFD, encoders, relays, switches, etc.)
  • Familiar with pneumatic circuits (cylinders, valves, solenoids, pumps, actuators, etc.)
  • Mechanical ability to disassemble mechanical parts, drilling and tapping screw holes. Minor fabrication such as brackets and small simple parts.
  • Proficient computer skills (Lotus Notes, Microsoft Office, Web interfaces) and responsive, customer-centric communication

Physical Demands:

  • Wearing respiratory equipment and working within confined space as needed
  • Lifting, carrying, and handling parts and tools up to 40 pounds without assistance
  • Repetitive walking, crouching, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, and climbing, at times for prolonged periods
  • Prolonged periods of standing, often in a stationary position
  • Strong manual dexterity and fine motor activities (pick, pinch, hold, grasp, flex, rotate), hand/eye/foot coordination
  • Concentrated mental and/or visual attention required to perform complex technical work
  • Working conditions may include dust, odors, inside/outside noise, vibration, and wet/uneven surfaces
  • Ability to wear ANSI Z87 approved safety glasses and other PPE as required per Job Safety Analysis

 Education and Experience Required:

  • Tech school certificate or AA, AS degree in electrical/electro-mechanical technology or related field (3 years industrial electrical work experience or related military experience may be substituted for AA/AS degree)
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing plant electronic and electrical equipment including programmable logic controllers, AC & DC motors and drives, machine control and other associated equipment

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • 1-3 years industrial electrical work experience
  • Knowledge of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Lean Manufacturing principles
  • Allen Bradley and/or other programming experience
