A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN

DUTIES:

Installs, modifies, tests, repairs and maintains transformers, converters, regulators, cables, switches, circuit breakers, mechanical and electronic systems and other circuit elements found in substations. Adjusts relays and control equipment to obtain specified voltage, current, time delay and other characteristics for appropriate holding, tripping, or other operational functions. Constructs and installs rigid conduits. Pulls in conductors, assembles bus bars and phases out and connects conductors. Cleans, adjusts and repairs electrical equipment such as air and oil circuit breakers and remote-control supervisory equipment. Checks condition of transformers, switches, capacitor equipment and cables. Checks transformer operating temperatures and voltage at secondary terminals and makes repairs to defective, loose or corroded connections. Trains and/or guides lower grade or lesser experience employees as required.

Performs Work on Uninterruptible Power Systems. Work and operate systems equipment and switchgear. Research, prepare and implement Hot Tie/Make before Break checklist for transferring UPS mission critical loads between supply bus distribution feeds.

Installs, modifies, connects, inspects, and repairs underground electrical distribution lines. Services lines, breakers, disconnect switches, transformers, insulators, grounding systems, fuses, poles (metal), relays, meters, lightning arresters, lightning protection systems, cathodic protection systems, airfield lighting systems (Helipad), power supplies and emergency generators. Installs and pulls cable underground from source of feed-through ducts. provides technical assistance to lower grade or lesser experience employees as required.

Troubleshoots distribution circuits and generating and controlling equipment. Makes emergency repairs and substitutions of power lines and equipment, sometimes working on distribution systems when they are energized. Troubleshoots overhead and underground cable systems to locate shorts, opens, grounds, electrolysis damages, capacitance imbalances, or cable breaks. Locates and marks electrical underground utilities prior to excavation. checks ground wire connections and cables for cracks, breaks, and corrosion.

Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Frequently works on high voltage electrical systems when they are "hot," using necessary safety equipment, methods, and precautions. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing.

Uses and maintains various hand and power tools and test equipment such as oscillators, meggers, phase sticks, phase rotation meters, digital test equipment and cable locating and fault-finding equipment. Uses block and tackle, hoists, winches or other lifting and pulling equipment, as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN

• Knowledge of commonly used high voltage electric power-generating and distribution equipment such as generators, transformers, switches, circuit breakers, recording instruments and control systems (SCADA).
• Knowledge of electrical principles and system operations such as power factor, transformers, series and parallel circuits, line loading, line losses and dielectric or conductive properties of material.
• Knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code and of types and sizes of wires/cables, conduits, transformers and other electrical equipment and circuit elements and the skill to integrate them into electrical systems and equipment to insure proper operation.
• Ability to install, maintain and repair commonly used distributing equipment (i.e., replace and adjust contacts and tripping and time delay intervals of circuit breakers, determine types and sizes of wire, conduit, transformers, etc. and methods of installation and repair).
• Skill in using test equipment and tools of the trade (i.e., oscillators, phase sticks and rotation meters, digital test equipment, faultfinding equipment, amp meters, voltmeters, meggers, graphic recorders and dressing tools).
• Knowledge of safety procedures of high voltage work, including what equipment to use when working on live circuits.
• Ability and skill in reading and understanding electrical drawings and circuit diagrams of interconnects such as the generators, buses, switches and circuit breakers in a power-generating facility or the feeders, substations, transformers, and interconnections of a distribution system in order to diagnose problems.
• Skill to diagnose and determine corrective action for electric power-controlling equipment such as switchgear, transformer banks and circuit breakers in substations and power-generating facilities.
• Skill to plan and carry through the troubleshooting and repair of high voltage generating, controlling, and distribution systems, such as repairing switch gear, installing and hooking up transformers, locating defects in cables or selecting materials to make installations or repairs.
• Working knowledge of electronics to troubleshoot and replace circuit boards in the controls of equipment such as electronic reclosers and other similar devices.
• Position requires the ability to discern colors and contrast.
• May be required to possess a valid operator's license in order to drive a motor vehicle to and from work sites.
• The employee frequently performs moderately heavy lifting, pulling and carrying of equipment and material weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and occasionally, lifts or pulls heavy cables and equipment weighing more than 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Work aloft on poles, at ground level and in ground trenches or manholes. Work requires bending, stooping, climbing and standing for long periods. At times, works in awkward positions and restricted spaces where coordination of hands, legs and body are needed to perform tasks.
• Must have and maintain a Secret Security Clearance and the ability to obtain a Common Access Card is required.
