EHS Specialist
Duties and responsibilities (Duties and responsibilities, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. - Plan and conduct sampling procedures in accordance with EPA methods for VPDES permits, of 12 outfalls.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates Best Management Practices (BMP’s) for the purpose of pollution reduction and prevention.
- Develops and presents training materials concerning environmental awareness in the maritime industry to management personnel and key company employees.
- Compares statistics on industry and regulatory studies for inconsistencies on adoption of regulatory requirements that are unbeneficial.
- Analyzes data collected from samples to determine probable effects of work settings and activities that contribute to undesired results consisting but not limited to: storm water pollution, process water pollution, and environmentally hazardous workplace conditions and exposures.
- Presents data in designated statistical format to illustrate common patterns among outfalls and effectiveness of BMPs.
- Initiates and maintains contacts with industry and regulatory leaders in other agencies to maintain access to source materials.
- Develops, implements, and coordinates compliance programs and procedure’s related to hazardous materials/hazardous waste, waste minimization/source reduction, air pollution control and water discharges.
- Maintain working knowledge of the permit process fro all regulatory bodies governing sites operations, and oversee the process of obtaining/maintaining permits as required to conduct operations and /or construction of facilities.
- Conducts research studies to develop theories or methods of abating or controlling sources of environmental pollutants, utilizing knowledge of principles and concepts of various scientific and engineering disciplines: Determines data collection methods to be employed in research projects and surveys.
- Plans and develops research models, using knowledge of mathematical, statistical, and physical science concepts and approaches.
- Identifies and analyzes sources of pollution to determine their effects. Accurately submits reports according to deadlines and permit requirements.
- Collects and synthesizes data derived from pollution emission measurements, atmospheric monitoring, meteorological and mineralogical information, and soil or water samples.
- Prepares graphs, charts, and statistical models from synthesized data, using knowledge of mathematical, statistical, and engineering analysis techniques
- Reviews plans and specifications for equipment and monitors projects though completion to ensure compliance with safety and occupational health standards and codes.
- Provides technical safety training/instruction to management, employees and/or safety representatives on a wide range of work operation areas.
- Develops specialized safety operating practices, modifying or adapting standard techniques when necessary, based upon interpretation of policies, standards, and regulations.
- Inspections of various shipyard jobs and shops, training and correcting safety hazards/ violations.
- Climbing ladders and entering vessel voids are common within the daily activities
- Analyzes practices, such as recordkeeping systems, forms control, suggestion systems, and performance standards to revise established procedures
- Performs routine clerical and administrative duties. Organizing files, preparing documents, tracking spreadsheets, scheduling appointments and supporting department needs.
- Participates in the development and implementation of shipyard safety programs such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry, fire protection, and other OSHA safety compliance programs.
- Advises Safety Manager regarding safety protocols and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by local, state, and federal agencies.
- Participates in the development and implementation of departmental safety work order tracking and reporting.
- Analyzes accident and incident reports for trends; makes recommendations for correcting unsafe conditions and actions.
These are desirables
· Bachelor's degree in safety related field; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
· Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
· Skill in performing safety inspections ensuring compliance with OSHA and NFPA safety standards.
· Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
· Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
· Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols.
· Skill in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with OSHA safety standards.
· Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures.
· Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
· Skill in developing safety procedures and protocols.
· Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
· Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
