Luna Labs is seeking a R&D Process Engineer that is eager to apply their background and contribute technically to the development of a novel and innovative carbon capture membrane. The position will continue to support existing lab-scale testing of membranes and will assist in the transition to bench- and pilot-scale testing of membrane modules within the next one to three years. The desired candidate should have a strong background in one or more the following areas: ceramic materials, high temperature gas separation systems, process modeling, building infrastructure for bench-scale prototype demonstrations; designing, developing, and building process system equipment or components, preparing engineering calculations (e.g., heat and mass balances, process flow diagrams, etc.), HAZOP analysis and risk management for new experiments, and developing analysis models. Ideally, the candidate will have 3+ years’ experience in the development and process design of membrane or carbon capture processes. The candidate should have a strong understanding of chemistry and materials with the desire to work in a hands-on role, under general supervision, using new or established methodology and analytical equipment. The candidate may also assist on a variety of currently funded materials programs and will be expected to conduct exploratory research and development efforts to help establish additional materials research and development (R&D) efforts.
Duties and Major Responsibilities:
- Assist the Principal Investigator to execute on the technical aspects of a $1-5M project, meeting technical milestones, providing data for reports, assisting with customer presentations, and ensuring assigned tasks/projects are completed according to schedule and within budget
- Design, build and integrate the infrastructure, equipment, sensors, and process controls necessary to commission and troubleshoot both lab- and bench-scale membrane test systems
- Operate test systems and perform experiments within a lab setting, including physical and analytical testing, and guide laboratory testing through the development and execution of test plans and the analysis and interpretation of data
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with staff (e.g., principal investigator, engineers, chemists, business and product managers) as well as vendors, external partners and clients
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience with process design, membranes, gas separations, carbon capture, or the development of lab- and bench-scale test systems
- Function well in a fast-paced and team-oriented R&D environment
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to quality and attention to detail
- Excellent communication, technical writing, analytical, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
Due to government contracting regulations, U.S. Citizenship is a firm requirement.
