As southwestern U.S. states third-largest craft brewer, our client is continuing their impressive growth and seeking a highly skilled, results driven Chief Operating Officer - Beverage Alcohol to join the team in a dynamic and exciting role to lead their next stage of expansion. It’s no secret that craft beer scene has exploded in the past decade but with a hot trend comes success and failures. The Chief Operating Officer - Beverage Alcohol manages and leads the companies manufacturing and enterprise IT operations, codifying and enforcing the systems that will take the business from 30,000 to 80,000 barrels of production annually within the next 3-5 years. By this, the Chief Operating Officer - Beverage Alcohol serves as the ultimate integrator, leading brewing, and operations, working closely with the CEO, and other departments to co-create and execute strategy. In the role, reporting into the CEO, you will be responsible for full P&L, People & Culture, Innovation, Brewing Operations, Quality Assurance, IT Systems, and Distribution. Keys to your success in the role will be using your lean expertise combined with knowledge of the consumer market to profitably scale the business, while building a desirable performance driven culture.
Responsibilities
- Lead the brewing team by taking the 1–3-year strategy and turning it into co-created tactics (Objectives and Key Results ‘OKRs’, projects, and programs).
- Manage and report company financial statements with P&L responsibility.
- Work with the Director of Craft Consulting to forecasts on a quarterly, annual, and multi-year time horizon for capacity and workforce planning.
- Manage select strategic partners and key relationships.
- Oversee cross-functional projects and programs. Owns special projects that improve the efficiency of the entire department.
- Set and enforce operating standards for the brewing department, and demonstrate the
- integrity to maintain and improve those standards.
- Retain key talent. Partner with People and Culture to adapt and improve all aspects of the people cycle to meet strategy and tactics most effectively.
- Implement beverage research, development and production scaling process with CEO direction.
- Oversee continual implementation and improvement of good manufacturing practices to comply with the Food Modernization and Safety Act (‘FMSA’).
- Provide prioritization to streamline purchasing and materials management.
- Provide prioritization of facility safety programs.
- Work with Enterprise to co-create database plans and IT systems for future manufacturing operations.
- Represents the company in the craft brewing community by supporting Craft Consulting, brewing community activities, in addition to other leadership roles such as advisory boards and professional organizations.
- Builds relationships with selected key partners and distributors. Participates in high level distributor meetings.
- Keep abreast of industry trends and demonstrate initiative to seek out opportunities for new products, ingredients, brewing techniques, technical developments, processes and efficiencies.
Qualifications
- Must have a strong understanding of the craft beer market and brewing processes with expertise in artisan products.
- Knowledge of Branding and Marketing in the Beverage Alcohol space.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of executive consumer products goods manufacturing leadership experience.
- Experience with manufacturing ERP software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to capture and lead a team across multiple departments in the organization.
- Preferred attributes include:
- Fermentation, distilling, and/or alcoholic beverage manufacturing.
- LEAN or 6-sigma manufacturing.
- Master’s in business administration ‘MBA’
- Ability to handle ambiguity and adapt in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
