Job Description

openIDL (open Insurance Data Link) is a permissioned blockchain network that streamlines regulatory reporting and provides new insights for insurers, while enhancing timeliness, accuracy, and value for regulators. OpenIDL Foundation’s mission is to create and drive the adoption of the openIDL permissioned blockchain network.

As Executive Director, you will work closely with both the Linux Foundation team supporting the openIDL foundation and the foundation’s Governing Board.

The Executive Director reports to the General Manager of Blockchain, Healthcare and Identity at the Linux Foundation. The Executive Director has overall strategic and operational responsibility for staff, programs, expansion and execution of openIDL’s mission. The Executive Director champions the mission and vision of the openIDL foundation so that the organization succeeds in advancing its mission.

Responsibilities

  • Grow the openIDL Community

    • Understand the ecosystem of openIDL project technologies and identify opportunities for the openIDL project to increase adoption of blockchain networks in the Insurance sector

    • Involve the Board, Technical Steering Committee (TSC), staff and end user communities in developing long-range programs to support and increase all types of contributions to openIDL projects.

    • Harmonize the ecosystem working actively with the Board, the TSC, and projects and adjacent foundations to find opportunities to collaborate and reduce confusion.

    • Cooperate with other institutions and organizations with shared goals and purposes

  • Effectively evangelize permissioned blockchain networks

    • Represents the openIDL Foundation in external relations with the technology community, governmental entities and funders, the media and the general public and promotes the openIDL mission with these groups.

    • Conducts public relations campaigns, maintains contact with the media, supervises and approves staff contacts with the media.

    • Organize and direct a multi-discipline team to establish a strong brand with end users and help to explain the technologies and benefits of adopting openIDL

    • Help position openIDL projects as leaders in the permissioned blockchain ecosystem.

  • Build the openIDL Membership

    • Develop new member relationships with a focus on growing a user community and the funding base.

    • Oversee staff or members involved in actively seeking funds from foundations, corporations and other sources.

    • Work with the Board and staff to effectively plan fundraising strategies.

    • Have ultimate responsibility for all communication with major funders of the openIDL foundation.

  • Run the Business

    • Involves the Board, TSC, staff and end user communities in developing organizational goals, a strategic plan and projections for supporting the openIDL mission.

    • Ensure that the openIDL programs have clear objectives that are within the scope of the resources and mission of the openIDL Foundation

    • Oversee the gathering, analysis and reporting of data illustrating the work accomplished by openIDL

    • Oversee all financial management of the openIDL Foundation, including all grant and funding administration required by either the Linux Foundation or other supporters. Possesses thorough knowledge of all funding sources and required records.

    • Prepare the budget for approval by the Governing Board.

    • Report to the Governing Board in a timely manner on all matters of importance including financial status, funding projections, policy setting, planning, program operations, employee matters and the long term health of the program.

    • Provide adequate materials and analysis to assist the Governing Board in making decisions on all matters of importance to policy setting.

    • Maintain and adapt the organizational structure and systems capable of meeting the needs of the openIDL Foundation in carrying out its mission.

    • Review program evaluation results and develops and executes strategies for continual improvement.

    • Encourage staff and volunteers throughout the foundation to develop creative solutions and innovative approaches to achieve their objectives.

    • Oversee all staff hiring and termination, as well as all other personnel-related matters of the program.

    • Create an environment that encourages cooperation of the staff to meet common goals.

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years experience with the insurance industry or other deeply regulated financial domain

  • 3-5 years of exposure to open source, open standards, or other collaborative processes; must be a “nerd diplomat”.

  • Strong technical proficiency and experience building products or communities in a field related to the insurance industry. Strong preference for enterprise blockchain experience.

  • Prior leadership experience (at least two years) as an Executive Director or senior manager of a nonprofit or related organization.

  • Experience and passion for working in both the technology and nonprofit sector.

  • Successful track record in fiscal oversight of a program or division of comparable size and complexity.

  • Experience reporting to and guiding Board leadership and Board development.

  • Commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.

  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach, supervise and motivate staff.

  • Proven track record setting and achieving strategic objectives while successfully managing organizational finances.

  • Strong technical marketing, public relations and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.

  • Persuasive and passionate communicator, both written and oral.

  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable and innovative.

  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.

Education and Other Training:

  • Required: B.A. or B.S degree or comparable industry experience.
