Job Summary

This position is a member of the Financial Services Team and works closely with the Vice President for Finance and Administration to ensure the accuracy of the College’s general ledger and budget development. The Controller manages and is responsible for the Business Office operations of the College including accounting and financial reporting, college budgeting, accounts payable, receivables, receipts and operating expenses; assures compliance with all federal, state and local requirements; ensures safeguarding of college assets through internal controls; and provides administrative support to all College departments. Under the direction of the Vice President, the Controller coordinates with the College’s external auditors to prepare the annual audit.

Essential Functions

1. Ensure balance sheet accounts are reconciled and adjusted as needed.

2. Record year-end adjusting journal entries, close the ledgers, and prepare annual financial statements.

3. Collaborate with the auditors to deliver needed reports and analyses during the audit process.

4. Monitor and execute the internal control structure with necessary improvements and enhanced compliance.

5. Mange month-end close procedures and prepare monthly financial statements and interim financial reporting associated with the month-end process.

6. Coordinate, approve, and enter monthly journal entries.

7. Collect and input budget amounts annually as well as review and assist with monthly budget analysis.

8. Review and authorize expenditures.

9. Provide leadership, supervision, training, and evaluation for the Assistant Controller, Accounts Payable Clerk, Student Accounts Clerk, and Bookstore/Mailroom Manager.

10. Participate in tax reporting for Form 1098T and all 1099 forms.

11. Gather and provide tax reporting information to auditors annually for completion of Form 990 non-profit tax return.

12. Responsible for chart of accounts including adding accounts, inactivating accounts, and adding departments and object codes.

13. Coordinate the use of facilities by outside parties.

14. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance or combination of increasingly responsible Accounting related experience or education.

2. A minimum of five years of experience in an accounting field with progressive growth in responsibilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.

2. Ability to work nights and weekends, as necessary.

3. Strong verbal, written, analytical, interpersonal and presentation skills.

4. Ability to work independently and to evaluate strategies regarding cash management and financial planning.

5. Ability to contribute as a team member.

6. Ability to understand and implement accounting standards in a regulated environment.

7. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

8. Proficient with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook, and ability to quickly learn and utilize College’s administrative software, Jenzabar.


1. Master’s Degree in Accounting or Finance.

2. Professional designation of CPA, CMA, CFM, or CFA.

3. Experience working in higher education.

Work Environment

This position operates in a fast-paced, professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.

Physical Demands

This position must be able to perform sedentary work, reach, grasp, talk, and hear. This position must have close visual acuity to view a computer terminal.
