Job Description

Goal of the Overall VISTA Project:

LifeBridge serves Bridgeport, CT the largest and one of the poorest communities in Connecticut. In an effort to break the cycle of poverty, the project will address the needs of our Urban Scholars so they can thrive. The project will also include their families, so families can better support their children. The goal is to increase the resilience of both youth and their families. The Urban Scholars Program Retention and Licensing VISTA will focus on developing the capacity of the Urban Scholars Program. This position will focus on retaining scholars and exceeding the required licensing standards for the Urban Scholars Program.

Objectives of the Assignment

Support Urban Scholar retention through communications with both scholars and their families. Our scholar families predominately speak English and Spanish.

  • Establish and build upon relationships with Urban Scholar families to build trust. Provide orientation to new scholars.
  • Call parents/guardians daily regarding any absent scholars to determine reasons for absence.
  • Meet quarterly with youth focus groups to determine what is important to them about the program and to identify barriers to participation.
  • Determine family needs and barriers to participation. Help identify ways to reduce barriers.
  • Develop and implement a scholar retention plan that draws upon the information gathered from scholars and family member. Plan will address retention within the afterschool and summer components as well as transitioning scholars from one to the other.

Assist with licensing of the Urban Scholars Program as a childcare center and a youth camp through the Office of Early Childhood.

  • Research licensing requirements and regulations for the childcare license.
  • Research licensing requirements and regulations for the youth camp license.
  • Review current procedures and records in relationship to the licensing requirements.
  • Help create and adapt paperwork and processes to meet the state and agency requirements.
  • Help to adapt the current record keeping systems as needed to document licensing compliance and scholar progress.

Maintain partnership with Summer Feeding Program and insure that snacks meet licensing requirements.

  • Manage summer feeding program, monitor its implementation and provide required documentation.
  • Establish snack menus that meet licensing requirements, monitor snack inventory and oversee distribution.

Assist with the development of systems and procedures for the Urban Scholars Program.

  • Review the existing systems and procedures for the afterschool and summer program.
  • Help to adapt and improve systems and procedures for summer program.
  • Help to adapt and improve systems and procedures for afterschool program.
  • Help to improve existing systems for screening and placing Urban Scholars.

Work with VISTA member team to help direct the overall project with input from the community and target population.

  • In partnership with LifeBridge staff, assist with focus groups of beneficiaries to determine what is important to them, what is working, and to get input on the project.
  • Meet with the community advisory group periodically to get their perspective on community needs and community resources, along with input on the project.
  • Develop and implement surveys that capture impact of the Urban Scholars Program and Community Closet. Surveys will be developed annually and distributed throughout the year.
  • Develop and implement volunteer assessment tool that captures volunteer experience, perspective on operations and client impact. Assessment tool updated annually as needed and implemented throughout the year.

Support LifeBridge's Fund Development efforts.

  • Manage data for grant reporting.
  • Document participant stories to be shared with funders.

The typical schedule is Monday through Friday (occasional evenings and weekends). The school year hours are 10:30 AM - 6:30 PM. The summer hours are 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
