Assistant Nurse Manager - Women's Oncology

JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Nurse Manager - Inpatient Oncology/Women's
Surgery is a supportive role to the Nurse Manager, and will oversee the
Women's Oncology (B6) unit which consists of 52 staff, 30 beds and 8-bed
advanced technologies unit (autologous peripheral stem cell
transplantation). Women's Oncology (B6) serves patients that are
Oncology, Women's Surgery, and general Med/Surg. This role has 24/7
accountability with a focus on improving and sustaining positive patient
outcomes, the patient experience, facilitating patient throughput, staff
engagement, operations, fiscal and change management. In addition, it
will be a requirement for this individual to maintain basic nursing
skills as required by the his/her specialty. The individual must
demonstrate basic competence in clinical, ethical and legal aspects
surrounding the provision of patient care. In the absence of the Nurse
Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager will assume full oversight and
responsibilities for the Women's Oncology unit. CLINICAL QUALITY
OUTCOMES Assist with ensuring successful unit and hospital clinical
performance. Ability to identify gaps to improve and sustain clinical
performance. Engage staff on all shifts enhancing active participation
on committees that improve and sustain outcomes. Support quality
initiatives on the unit through assessment, problem identification, data
collection, change implementation and monitor outcomes. Assist with
hard-wiring unit excellence by ensuring that agreed upon strategies are
consistently performed by staff. Ensure staff behaviors and clinical
practice are aligned with the desired outcomes. Conduct random chart
audits and direct observation of clinical practice standards. Provide
real time feedback to staff and counsel as appropriate. Facilitate
various unit based committee/councils, based on evidenced based practice
that result in improved outcomes. In collaboration with the nurse
manager, based on evidenced based practice, works with the
Inter-professional team to design and implement a plan for unit process
improvements. Using Just Culture principles investigates adverse events,
provides follow-up, takes appropriate corrective action, identifies
trends and reports to unit leadership and Quality Risk Management. Based
on evidenced based practice, contributes to the development/revision of
policy, procedures and practice standards that guide and support the
delivery of patient care services. PATIENT EXPERIENCE Collaborates with
nursing and other organizational leaders on initiatives to achieve and
sustain HCAHPS and Press Ganey results that reflect the patient
experience. Ensure staff are performing all tasks that result in a
positive patient experience. Monitor staff to ensure that they are doing
purposeful hourly care rounds and bedside shift report in a manner
consistent with achieving the goals. Provide timely feedback, coaching
and counsel to employees. In collaboration with the nurse manager,
purposeful round on patients ensuring patient needs and expectations are
met. Identify gaps and provide immediate feedback and coaching as
appropriate. Address and identify patient/family concerns in a timely
manner. Review survey comments with staff identifying strengths and
opportunities for improvement. Develops strategies for reward and
recognition and strategies for improvement. Complete daily rounding with
purpose. PATIENT THROUGHPUT Ensure timely patient throughput by
identifying and removing barriers that prevent the facilitation of
patient placements. In collaboration with the Clinical Support Center
(CSC) and Hospital Operations Coordinator (HOC), facilitates patient
throughput. Ensure staff call and receive Hand-off report in a timely
manner, identifying and addressing gaps that prohibit timely bed
placement. Assist staff with barriers and escalate to Manager/Director
when unable to facilitate timely patient movement. Collaborate with the
Hospital Operations Coordinator and clinical support staff to avoid
surge capacity. Collaborate with Staff and other departments during
surge capacity alerts to facilitate patient placement. Step in as Charge
Nurse to support patient admission, discharge and acuity. CLINICAL
MANAGEMENT Maintains competent in specialty area. Demonstrates
proficiency in clinical/ethical/legal aspects surrounding the provision
of patient care. Assist with developing and setting strategic target
plans for unit outcomes and other clinical initiatives. Support the
Nurse Manager by creating sustainable work process that are consistent
with patient centered care Assist the Nurse Manager with performance
management and staff coaching. Assume full responsibility of unit
functions in the absence of the Nurse Manager. Ensure appropriate
utilization of resources and skill mix to meet patients care needs on
unit. Support professional development and ensure staff behaviors and
practice are aligned with shared governance expectations including
consistent committee involvement. EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT Work
collaboratively with the Nurse Manager to build positive, productive
working relationships with the staff ensuring that the staff are engaged
and committed to the organizational strategic plan. Meet with staff to
complete 1:1 Performance Management Assessment, soliciting feedback on
opportunities for improvement. Recognize high and solid performers and
develop strategies to improve and stabilize unit retention. Assist with
analyzing employee engagement identifying areas of opportunity. Develop
corrective plans of action in conjunction with the nurse manager and
staff to implement and monitor for desired and sustained improvement.
Develop high performing team attributes and collaboration. Support the
advancement and integration of EBP into the workplace. Model "Crucial
Conversation" communication. FISCAL MANAGEMENT Assist Nurse Manager with
the preparation and management of unit operations/capital budget.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: 1-3 years of experience; BSN degree and
National Cert in area of specialty required: Oncology Certified Nurse
(OCN) or Certified Med Surg RN (CMSRN). MSN, MS, MA or MBA is preferred.
Must have at least 1 year of formal nursing leadership experience.
