Lead Satellite Systems Engineer
LeoStella is a state-of-the-art small satellite design and manufacturing company based in the Seattle area. At LeoStella, we are redefining how high-quality satellite constellations are built at scale. Our focus is on developing and using intelligent and agile engineering and manufacturing processes to accelerate the development and production of small-sat constellations, all while lowering costs and increasing on-orbit capabilities.
The work we do at LeoStella is helping organizations and markets change the world by removing the barriers to building satellite constellations. We were recently named to Seattle Business Magazine Top 100 companies to work for, so come work with a high performing team focused on changing the paradigm in satellite development and production!
Position Description:
A Satellite Systems Engineer at LeoStella must understand that a spacecraft is a highly integrated system in which changes to any part impacts the others in complicated and non-obvious ways. You will be the glue that ties together this complex, high-performance system in an efficient manner and ensure consistency between system, subsystem, and component requirements, interfaces, and performance. The Systems Engineering practice must be light-weight and agile enough to avoid encumbering the engineering team during the product design cycle, but robust enough to mitigate design errors, rework, and overall program risk.
You will work across the satellite system, subsystems, and components to decompose requirements and establish requirements traceability. As a Lead Systems Engineer, you will collaborate with subject matter experts and subsystem leads to develop and maintain system-level analyses and will work to develop key pieces of technical documentation such as concept of operations summaries, system block diagrams, and verification plans. You will work collaboratively with internal and external (customer and supplier) engineering teams to evaluate and develop technical solutions that allow LeoStella to be a market leader in constellation satellite development and production.
Primary Responsibilities:
-
Serve as a hands-on engineer and technical leader across multiple satellite subsystems
-
Perform functional analyses, detailed trade studies, and interface definition efforts to translate requirements into concepts and eventually detailed and qualified designs
-
Perform requirements decomposition and assist in developing requirements traceability from the stakeholder level to the component level
-
Develop and maintain technical budgets such as link, power, delta-v, and pointing
-
Create and update electrical wiring harness schematics
-
Establish and document system and subsystem-level architecture with artifacts such as states and modes diagrams, functional block diagrams, interconnect diagrams, and physical block diagrams
-
Create and maintain system and sub-system interface control documents
-
Derive software requirements and user stories from CONOPS and specifications
-
Create, modify, and run system-level simulations using MATLAB, Simulink, and Python
-
Develop verification plans for hardware and software requirements at all levels of assembly, in a right sized and efficient manner
-
Collaborate amongst a multi-disciplinary engineering and production team to design and test satellite systems, subsystems, and components
-
Work closely with external suppliers and customers to manage requirements, interfaces, and data exchange
Required Qualifications:
-
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, ideally Aerospace or Systems Engineering
-
8+ years of experience in satellite systems engineering
-
Demonstrated ability to multitask and work autonomously with high level direction only
-
Experience with most of the following: CONOPS development, spacecraft functional analyses, requirements decomposition and definition, modeling and simulation, trade studies, risk management, reliability engineering, orbital mechanics, launch and space environments, fault tolerant systems, spacecraft assembly and test, and technical budget management
-
Must be a U.S. Person
Desired Qualifications:
-
Experience in all phases of system/subsystem development, from initial concept definition through on-orbit operation
-
Familiarity with using electrical test equipment and hands-on experience with engineering and flight hardware units
-
Experience managing large, interconnected requirements sets (experience using a requirements management tool such as Jama or DOORS is preferred)
-
Proficient with modeling tools and scripting languages such as Matlab/Simulink, Python, or STK
Compensation & Benefits:
-
Compensation range is $130K-$180K + 10+% target bonus
-
Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case by case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
-
Base salary is one part of your total rewards package - you may also be eligible for up to 10+% potential bonuses. Additional employee benefits are detailed below as well.
-
Employee Benefits include:
-
Employer-paid Medical, Dental, Vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, short and long-term disability.
-
401(k) with up to 3% company match
-
Paid parental leave and maternity-disability leave
-
Paid Time Off and Flexible Schedule: You may accrue 4 weeks paid time off per year, in addition to 8 company holidays. You may also have the choice to take Flexible Friday off every other week.
