Support overall business objectives of lean manufacturing and SQD&C through continuous improvement in productivity of operations. Perform a variety of engineering work in planning and design of manufacturing machinery and processes, other mechanically functioning equipment and new product development. Work with other engineering and manufacturing disciplines in the development and application of processes to increase production quality, efficiency, or capacity.

 

Essential Functions

  • Improve production methods, including production flow, tooling, assembly methods, and production equipment, to ensure production cells are operating at optimum levels by effective use of materials, equipment and personnel. Participate as member in project teams and continuous improvement teams.
  • Develop, document, test and evaluate moderately complex processes, techniques and equipment for new products which will improve output, quality, and process capability. Develop and design production aids, fixtures, tooling, and gages for improved production efficiency and for new product implementation. 
  • Ensure project plans conform to schedules for timely introduction of new products into production and determines processing methods, workforce and schedule requirements, capital equipment and required tooling & gauging (with related cost estimates) needed for new products. Supply data needed for accurate estimates of lead time for implementation of manufacturing, material and purchased parts costs. 
  • Report on status and final results of projects to ensure accomplishment of technical objectives. Prepare and present reports outlining the progress and outcome of technical projects and makes recommendations to implement desired improvements.
  • Support justification preparation for new capital equipment or upgrades & modifications to existing equipment. This may include the development of production machinery and managing installation process.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with cross-functional areas to ensure new products are introduced to manufacturing in an effective manner.
  • Provide feedback to product designers regarding design improvements based on manufacturability or customer suggestions.
  • Proactively identify problem areas and organize support for manufacturing with root cause analysis and process improvement that supports a lean environment. Support other departments with troubleshooting, plant layout, technical problems, and other engineering related issues.
  • Participate in a department culture which supports the principles of Safety, Quality, Delivery, & Cost.

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Manufacturing, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • One or more years of experience which provides knowledge of manufacturing processes in light industry and documents utilization of advanced problem-solving skills preferred.
  • Familiarity with process capability tools and Lean manufacturing principles preferred.
  • Strong computer knowledge with demonstrated experience in MS Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • CAD and print reading skills required. Solidworks experience preferred.
