Job Description

The Law Office of Michael P. Boyce, PC invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Social Worker/Family Advocate. This is an opportunity to work with our attorneys on primarily court appointed cases representing indigent parents where our clients' parental rights could potentially be terminated. The Social Worker/Family Advocate will work as part of the legal defense team, adhering to the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct regarding attorney-client privilege and confidentiality. In other words, if the candidate hired has an L.S.W. or higher degree, the Rules of Professional Conduct regarding attorney-client privilege apply to the employee's duty to disclose privileged communications under exceptional circumstances, not the rules governing social workers and their obligations when certain circumstances arise.

Our firm currently uses contract social workers/family advocates to assist with our client representation. We are now looking to hire someone full-time to fill this need for us.

Duties may include:

  • Advocating for the expressed goals of the client
  • Engaging and motivating parents to participate in the dependency and neglect process
  • Assisting in developing and presenting alternative treatment plans to the court
  • Observing visits between the parent and child/ren
  • Attending scheduled meetings with the parent and providing advocacy during the meetings
  • Providing clinical consultation to the attorney to develop case strategies and support litigation
  • Identifying barriers to clients’ ability to achieve their goals for their case
  • Investigating and Proposing potential solutions to assist clients in achieving their goals.
  • Assisting the attorney to identify possible expert evaluations or expert witnesses
  • Attending court appearances as needed
  • Compiling, updating, and maintaining resources for clients
  • Participating in relevant trainings with the Colorado Office of Respondent Parent Counsel
  • Performing other duties as requested by the Lead Attorney

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Commitment to social justice
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work on an interdisciplinary team
  • Self-directed organizational and time management skills
  • Clinical or professional understanding of mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, and family systems
  • Ability to establish collaborative working relationships with institutional players including caseworkers, respondent parents, clients’ families, therapists, etc.
  • Ability to travel (must have reliable transportation)
  • Meet monthly minimum billable hour requirements of 150 hours/month
  • Utilize different methods of communication and approaches to best assist parents toward achieving their goals
  • Ability to juggle multiple deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Availability on weekends for calls from clients.
  • Visiting clients in custody in the Denver Metro Area

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree (MSW) from a Graduate School accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and eligible for licensure as a Social Worker in Colorado (LSW or LCSW).
  • Bachelor’s level professionals will be considered if they have a minimum of two years of direct child welfare experience.
  • A strong background in child welfare and knowledge of the child welfare system
  • Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and access to a working vehicle
  • Must be vaccinated/continue booster shots
