#### Search Information

Our Adult Basic & Secondary Education Department is seeking to expand its pool of part-time faculty to teach Basic Skills Development, GED Preparation, or College Preparation.

* Positions may be available at the following Lane locations Main Campus, Downtown Campus, Cottage Grove, Florence, Springfield, Junction City and in corrections environments (Sherman Center and Lane County Jail.)
* More than one position may be needed for Summer, Fall, Winter or Spring terms. If you are selected for an interview you will receive a phone call and e-mail from the department.

## Salary/Compensation Statement

#### * Our application is used to determine your initial salary placement for selected candidates. All employment and education history will be considered.

* Starting range for part-time faculty is Step 1 - Step 10, see our Part-time Faculty Salary Schedule.
* The Part-time Faculty benefits package includes a generous contribution toward medical, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, long term disability and paid sick leave. Part-time faculty may be eligible for full contracted benefits after meeting certain criteria.

All employees are compensated through electronic direct deposit.

## Working Schedule

Assignments are made on a term-by-term basis and follow processes outlined in faculty contract, including Article 34.

# Required QUALIFICATIONS

## Required Education

* Bachelor's degree in relevant subject areas (Education, Adult Education) and Master's degree in education, special education, or a related field.
* Examples of a related field are fields related to the GED (reading, writing, science, social studies, math), or elementary education.

## Required Experience

* Two (2) years appropriate elementary, secondary, special education, or adult education experience teaching reading, writing, or math, or basic skills at a secondary education level.
* Experience should be with academically under-prepared adults, limited English proficient students, or youth whose skills are below the level of high school graduates.

## Conditions of Employment

#### Employment requires the following upon hire:

Completion of Oregon Learning Standards Orientation and Learning Circles professional upon employment and when offered is required.

## Preferred Education

* Completion of Oregon Learning Standards Orientation and Learning Circles training.
* Completion of one or more Oregon Learning Standards Institutes (Speaking/Listening, Math, Reading, Writing)or documentation of similar training from a different U.S. state.

## Preferred Experience

* Recent (within 5 years) teaching adults in a community college setting.
* Experience with one or more of the following: 1) teaching adults or youth with learning disabilities, 2) family or workplace literacy
* Experience working with multi-level learners
* Experience articulating to and/or coordinating with work or educational settings, community agencies, or programs related to student advancement and success.

## Bilingual/Multicultural Statement

## Position Purpose

To teach Adult Basic Education, Pre-GED and GED classes in reading, writing, mathematics or computer skills for adult students, age 16 and older, to equip them to become active participants in society, hold a job, and/or further their education and training.

## Essential Functions

#### Teach pre-GED and GED subject areas.

* Assignments may include instruction in mathematics, literature, social studies, reading, writing, science, and computer skills, using instructional methods geared toward adult learning.
* Plan lessons and curriculum appropriate to the needs of students and according to Oregon Learning Standards for Adult Basic Skills.
* Develop articulated curriculum and align instruction with the criteria and skill levels established by the federal government, the state of Oregon, the CASAS assessment system, GED content areas, bridge courses to post-secondary education, including career pathways.
* Implement a variety of delivery methods including: directed study, distance learning, technology, tutoring, and other strategies of sufficient intensity to help learners make learning gains.
* Adapt options and strategies for managing learning objectives within a multi-level or multi-subject class.
* Provide intake, orientation, placement and progress assessment for students.
* Complete and maintain appropriate student registration, attendance, and assessment records, and ensure the timely submission of reports.
* Help students access support services, college and employment resources.
* Communicate effectively, respectfully, and work productively with students of diverse backgrounds, but not limited to: students of color, bilingual students, students from various cultures, older students, and students with disabilities.
* Develop and maintain collaborations with inter-agency, community programs, and instructional linkages with faculty from other program, departments, or instructional units to enhance program offerings, student access, retention, and successful transition.
* Maintain and post teaching schedule, regular meetings and office hours.
* Maintain physical campus presence for instruction and daily needs of students, departments, college and community, as specified in the College Online Policy and Procedure System http://www.lanecc.edu/copps/documents/instructor-hours-campus
* Maintain student records, attendance, grades, and/or other required documentation in both electronic and hard copy formats; Report and record in a timely manner as required by department and college policy.
* Ensure a safe, quality classroom or lab, including equipment, supplies, and inventory
* Continually evaluate and assess student outcomes through appropriate assessment tools/methods; actively utilize results to inform improvements at a program and course level
* Faculty with teaching duties are responsible for evaluating student achievement, of clearly identified learning outcomes, consistent with core ability outcomes; meet accreditation requirements .
* Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
* Perform other related duties as assigned.

#### Support student learning through activities that include:

* Exhibit compliance with College policies and procedures, accountability for leave time, time sheet completion, release time, text book ordering and related functions
* Sustain currency in discipline and innovation in teaching
* Collegial participation in faculty performance evaluation process
* Maintain and post teaching schedule, regular meetings and office hours

* Maintain requirements for student records, attendance, grades, and/or other documentation; ensure a safe, quality classroom or lab, including equipment, supplies, and inventory

#### Curriculum Delivery

* Provide high quality classroom instruction
* Create course content, develop and revise course content and materials
* Establish learning outcomes consistent with core ability outcomes, assess outcomes using appropriate assessment tools, and use assessment results to inform improvements at a program and course level
* Incorporate college values into curriculum and promote a respectful learning environment including facilitating awareness of multicultural and diversity issues in curricula
* Teach and develop all class syllabi and course materials, in a form that can be directly delivered to, and used by, students
* Confer with students on course materials
* Deliver curriculum to students in traditional and online formats.

#### Online Teaching and Student Support

* Expect to make use of the Learning Management System (LMS) to publish and update content, post grades and promote student engagement amongst students with course content;
* Use multiple modes of communication tools including online publishing, audio and video tools;
* Be present within the online course to interact with students, help guide asynchronous discussions and provide opportunities for students' voices to be heard within the online course;
* Monitor student progress and provide reasonable coaching and assistance to struggling students towards success;
* Review and grade all work submitted by students and provide timely and substantive feedback;
* Respond to student inquiries within 48 hours;
* Ensure that all materials created are accessible and meet the guidelines of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act;
* Post student attendance, grades, and course syllabus to the college LMS in accordance with college timelines;
* Use current best practices and pedagogies for teaching online including the application of online course quality frameworks for clearly providing course learning objectives to students, while consistently setting clear weekly and term-long expectations for work and assessment.

## Supervision Statement

#### Supervision

Faculty report to a Department or Division Dean, and perform instruction-related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner and in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of the college: Lane Vision, Mission, Values

Work may be overseen by a lead faculty member.

## Physical Demands/Working Environment

This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that includes office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. This position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

## Knowledge Skills and Abilities

#### Knowledge of and skill in:

* Adult learning theory; effective practices for teaching basic and secondary skills to adults and/or youth; competency based assessment systems and student performance data to meet instructional objectives; maintain and manage records;

#### Ability to:

* Apply adult learning theories, special education, reading, and/or ESL teaching methods such as assessment to instruction, direct instruction, cooperative learning, multi-sensory instruction, and integration of prior learning into current coursework; work with cultural diverse classes and work with colleagues in teams which contribute to program and college goals; use effective interpersonal skills to work with students from culturally diverse groups; plan instruction using Oregon Learning Standards for Adult Basic Skills for heterogeneous, multi-level groups; effectively manage small and large groups as well as individual; adapt to and plan for open-entry/open exit instruction; effectively integrate technology into a variety of learning environments; take a leadership role in the facilitation of transitional students to post secondary education, training or work; work in a team-oriented and respectful learning and working environment; solve problems and resolve conflict in a respectful and professional manner
* Certification in American Red Cross Adult CPR and First Aid within 6 months of hire. Ability to obtain certification in CASAS, Implementing CASAS, and TOPS training within 6 months of hire.
* Provide support to employees working to meet accreditation standards through evaluation and assessment of student outcomes.
