Patient Engagement Specialist

The Patient Engagement Specialist (PES) serves to shepherd patients through their time at the facility. The PES uses motivational interviewing techniques to build rapport with each patient individually in order to increase motivation for change, help patients remain in treatment, and empower patients to achieve their treatment goals. We strive to employ a "love-first" model, meaning we avoid shame and authoritarian approaches to patient management. We are seeking individuals who are charismatic, engaging, and above all passionate about addiction treatment, and who are capable of motivating others through love and persuasion. The right candidate will thrive on human interaction, enjoy being on his or her feet most of the day, and be energetic and motivating.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Lead internal 12 step meetings using the principals of Alcoholics Anonymous and similar organizations
  • Lead patients in community building exercises, such as team volleyball, Recovery Jenga, and other relevant games and activities
  • Ensure all patients attend all scheduled groups and activities
  • Use loving, motivational techniques to encourage patients to participate actively in their treatment program
  • Recognize signs of engagement and identify patients with low to moderate levels of engagement
  • Develop and execute on plans to reengage patients with lower levels of engagement
  • Complete all patient engagement worksheets within 24 hours of admission, including:
    • Patient Retention Interview--What might cause a patient to leave treatment early and what is the patient's plan to avoid internal and external triggers to leave treatment?
    • Family Support Interview--Identify friends and family who support the patient's treatment; prepare them for how to manage their loved one's requests to leave treatment early and reengage them to stay
    • Retention Strategy--Develop a strategy for how to identify risks to remaining in treatment and how to overcome the risks
  • Engage all patients who are actively trying to leave treatment early; refer back to patient engagement worksheets and work a strategy to retain patient in treatment
  • When patients do leave treatment early, complete ASA Analysis Worksheet to identify any strategies that could have been used to retain patient
  • Chart all critical interactions and groups with patients
  • Ensure no patients are unaccompanied on the patient milieu
  • Develop personal rapport with patients and use rapport to ensure patients are engaged and happy in their treatment program

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Must be committed to drug-free lifestyle and responsible alcohol use
  • Candidate must be able to explain personal passion or interest in substance abuse issues
  • Candidate must be highly charismatic
  • Candidate must be highly engaging and able to relate to patients
  • Candidate must demonstrate ability to overcome objections
  • Candidate must be outgoing and social
  • Candidate must enjoy spending the majority of time on his or her feet rather than behind a desk
  • Formal or informal sales experience preferred
  • Must be comfortable speaking to large groups of people
  • Candidate should be comfortable leveraging his or her personal story to build rapport and credibility with patients
  • Candidate must be passionate about addiction recovery and should be able to articulate a personal connection to the field
  • Committed team player willing to learn new skill sets
  • 1 year prior experience working with Substance Abuse populations strongly preferred
