The Industrial Hygienist 4 position supports the mission of the Division of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) by focusing on methods to identify, prevent, reduce, and eliminate workplace exposure to hazards that cause injuries and illnesses. This position is a statewide industrial hygiene specialist for the Digital Education Program in the DOSH Education and Outreach Services Program.

The person in this role will research, develop, and disseminate educational materials in industrial hygiene to assist employers. This position interacts with DOSH, L&I and other state agencies and federal OSHA, employers, employer/employee groups/associations to complete work.

  • Create occupational health outreach documents, learning materials and content for DOSH web pages, presentations and social media postings visually appealing and easy to follow.
  • Research industries for occupational health hazards and website resources.
  • Draft and updating content of various outreach materials for the DOSH website.
  • Collaborate with DOSH Technical Services and Consultation staff and agency communications staff.
  • Coordinate with DOSH webmaster and agency staff for mock-up and publishing to the website, and ensuring distribution both internally and externally.
  • Assist businesses and workers prevent work-related diseases.
  • Write technical content, in industrial hygiene topics, to be disseminated by L&I’s social media platforms as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, GovDelivery, podcasts, etc.
  • Research and resolve technical issues and questions via phone call and email.
  • Collaborate with DOSH Technical Staff to verify technical accuracy of information.
  • Review and stay current with technical information needed for development of workplace safety and health learning.
  • Collaborate with rule project team on specific outreach needs, developing resources specific to new rule development.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and promotion of safety and health management programs.
  • Present and train on industrial hygiene topics.

Education and Experience:

  • Five years’ experience as a DOSH Industrial Hygienist, of which two years must be at the IH 3 or higher level.

OR

  • A Bachelor's degree involving major study in occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering, environmental science, nursing, medicine, biology or related field.

AND

  • Five years of professional experience as an industrial hygienist or environmental professional, in the field, or in governmental enforcement, or program implementation activities of industrial hygiene programs, including at least three years of experience as an industrial hygienist or equivalent.

Please Note: A Master's degree in public health, management, business administration, engineering, education, physical and social sciences will substitute for up to two years of the required experience. Additional safety and health qualifying experience will also substitute year for year for the required education.

  • Bilingual preferred. Must have the ability to communicate effectively; speak, understand, and write another language in a workplace setting. All bilingual positions must pass the language proficiency assessment at the advanced low level or higher, if they will perform any written correspondence translation they will also need to pass the written assessment at the level of advanced low or higher.
  • Ability to write clearly and experience writing content about occupational safety & health topics for a lay audience (i.e., employers and workers).
  • Experience using Microsoft suite applications such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word, Articulate Storyline, or other types of software tools used to create effective learning resources.


Desired:

  • Project management planning and coordinating knowledge and experience:
  • A Master's degree involving major study in industrial hygiene or related field can be substituted for one year of industrial hygiene or related field experience.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) granted by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
  • Bilingual preferred. Must have the ability to communicate effectively; speak, understand, and write another language in a workplace setting.
