Title: Special Education Teacher Status: Exempt

Supervisor: Head of Academics Supervises: Teacher Assistant

Essential Duties:

  • Identify and use instructional methods and curricula that are effective in meeting the needs of exceptional individuals
  • Create a safe and effective learning environment that contributes to the fulfillment of needs, stimulation of learning and of self-control
  • Notify the Executive Director or Head of Academic in the event of an accident, emergency, or unusual incident that could potentially affect health and/ or safety
  • Participate in the selection and use of appropriate instructional materials, equipment, and supplies needed in teaching
  • Provide accurate program data to the Head of Academics and parents regarding students in the classroom
  • Mentor and collaborate with Teacher Assistant on teaching techniques and methods
  • Greet and supervise students at arrival and dismissal
  • Keep assessments updated and in a timely manner
  • Conduct parent-teacher conferences a minimum of twice per year
  • Keep close track of classroom equipment and supplies
  • Maintain confidentiality of information except where information is released under specific conditions of written consent
  • Participate in and attend school functions
  • In coordination with the Head of Academics, develop Academic Student Plan (ASP) objectives annually for each student
  • Monitor progress and update ASP objectives four times a year for the review of the Head of Academics
  • On a quarterly basis, input report card information
  • Other Duties as assigned

Additional Responsibilities:

Follow all school policies

  • Use professional language and actions with adult in program at all times
  • Create a substitute file that includes at a minimum: class list, daily schedule, discipline plan, and explanation of where specific materials are kept
  • Complete CPR and first aid training
  • Keep bulletin boards current

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor/Master Degree in Special Education
  • Certification as a Special Education Teacher in the state of Florida

Additional Qualifications:

  • Demonstration of excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and ability to drive a vehicle according to FDOT standards
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with others
  • CPR Certified
