JOB TITLE: Payroll Accountant

REPORTS TO: Director of Finance

Be a LEADer. Support the administration of payroll for LEAD Public Schools.

LEAD Public Schools seeks a Payroll Accountant to support the financial and human resources function of the organization by providing accurate, timely and compliant processing of payroll and personnel related expenditures. The Payroll Accountant will maintain and build critical payroll processes and procedures to support a staff of 400 full time employees. This person will also be responsible for the accurate accounting and analysis of over $30M in annual personnel related expenditures. While this role will report to the Director of Finance, this individual will work collaboratively with their peers in the HR department to provide excellent customer service to all staff. This role would be perfect for someone with payroll experience who would like to have more authority to craft the personnel related function of a dynamic and growing organization.

LEAD Public Schools is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with close to a $50M annual budget and 400 full time staff members. Unlike typical payroll related jobs, this role is eligible for 12 days of annual PTO in addition to several weeks of school related holidays throughout the year. While this person will need to regularly report in person to our Nashville based offices, hybrid work options are available for the right candidate. Payroll Processing
  • Implement, maintain, and review biweekly payroll processing and accounting systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Own all aspects of personnel related audits, including the annual financial audit, annual retirement plan filings,Form 5500, workers comp audits, etc.
  • Review and reconcile biweekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports.
  • Monitor compensation data and support the annual performance compensation process.
  • With support of HR team, research any payroll related staff inquiries and respond to payroll tickets.
  • Own year-end W2 and other payroll tax reporting processes.
  • Create and generate all personnel related reporting to internal and external stakeholders including charter authorizers and the TN Dept of Education.
  • Support the annual benefits enrollment process, including rollout of all rates and plan changes.

  • Import payroll data from ADP into accounting software (Sage Intacct); ensure accurate coding.
  • Review and analyze all personnel related budget to actual variances, including FTE count, wages and related benefits.
  • Prepare a variety of reports and related information for decision-making purposes.
  • Create, submit and reconcile benefits, retirement and pension bills. Reconcile tax and benefits liability accounts in accounting system.
  • Support Revenue Manager in all personnel related processes for roughly $8M in annual grant reimbursements, including coding staff in payroll system by funding source, maintaining and collecting time and effort documentation, and providing reports and backup documentation for all public grant reimbursement submissions.
  • Support the annual budgeting process for personnel expenditures including forecasting wages and benefits costs.

  • Identify and recommend process improvements related to payroll accounting software, systems, and procedures.
  • Support process improvements and build out additional capabilities in ADP.
  • Support finance and HR departments in training managers how to best utilize the payroll system.

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business management, human resources or other related field.
  • 3+ years of processing payroll in a HCMS such as ADP, UltiPro, or Lawson. (ADP preferred)
  • Accounting experience preferred
  • Ability to be detailed and timeline oriented in an environment where priorities may change.
  • Experience in developing and implementing payroll processing process, procedures, and workflows in a HCMS.
  • Strong analytical and data analysis skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office; especially Excel.
  • Ability to build trust and drive change by forming good relationships with staff.
  • Self-starter who sets high goals and can handle multiple projects at once.
  • Belief in LEAD's mission of preparing students for college and life.

This is a full-time position. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and includes full benefits and technology provisions. Grade 6.
