Job Description

 Overall responsibility to support full network infrastructure life cycle.  Performs highly complex duties in the installation, integration, administration and maintenance of the wireless network infrastructure.  Manages and optimizes network performance and interoperability; responsible for the installation, maintenance and monitoring of the organization's network switching and routing infrastructure.  Experienced in managing network infrastructure and understand all aspects of IP routing and switching technologies.   Responsible for integrating and managing the interoperations of the  external network systems to provide an efficient, stable, reliable infrastructure; as well as for effective operations and sharing of applications/information to both internal and external customers. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:


The activities noted below provide a non-exhaustive list of the responsibilities held by the Network Engineer. Our company will expect the engineer to assume additional responsibilities, as business needs dictate.

  • Meets scheduling, performance, and attendance requirements
  • Installs, integrates and maintains the wireless and external facing network physical infrastructure to include network hardware, software and devices, including servers, routers, and switches and cabling and other wiring equipment
  • Diagnoses and resolves wireless and external facing network connectivity issues
  • Monitors, analyzes and manages all network traffic and other conditions to achieve optimal performance and uptime
  • Analyzes data to minimize wireless and external facing network congestion
  • Identifies need for network upgrades and enhancements to meet long-term branch needs
  • Performs network upgrades and conversions
  • Develops and maintains network documentation and reference tools
  • Performs advanced troubleshooting on network hardware, software and connectivity problems
  • Monitors trends and developments in wireless and customer facing networks
  • Optimizes wireless infrastructure by implementing approved network standards
  • Ensures compatibility of all new and ongoing projects and solutions with existing infrastructure and strategic vision.
  • Introduces sophisticated elements of redundancies and rollovers to reduce or eliminate staff involvement in recovering from technical failures. 
  • Optimizes system performance by identifying improvement opportunities
  • Develops and monitors performance metrics to detect and correct network performance deficiencies and network traffic congestion points
  • Performs project functions for network installation projects
  • Evaluates and recommends software, tools and utilities to aid in automated monitoring and management of network performance
  • Troubleshoots network failures, outages, and network performance deficiencies, and coordinate the implementation of solutions
  • In emergency, assist with 24/7 NOC duty and perform on-site support to resolve any service issues within committed response time
  • Works courteously with customers in situations that require tact and diplomacy in order to identify and resolve technical issues.


Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university and at least 2-4 years network engineer or administration or equivalent combination of education and experience

Commanding knowledge and understanding of the following concepts/technologies:

COS - QoS – Policing, Shaping and Troubleshooting

Routing – BGP, OSPF, route redistribution, static routes, route maps, NAT, PIM SM

Switching – Mikrotik, Cisco IOS and Cisco NXOS, and other switches

Protocol Analysis – TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, SIP, VoIP

Layer 2 protocols – Spanning tree, VTP, port channels, load balancing, SPAN, HSRP

WAN acceleration and optimization

Telephony – PSTN BRI & PRI, IP H323 & SIP, Extension management & dial plans

Experience with managing enterprise monitoring tools

Strong problem solving/troubleshooting skills

Experience supporting large, complex, production environments
