Job Description

The Kauai Humane Society (KHS) seeks a part-time Pet Airport Inspection Specialist. The Kauai Humane Society helps pet owners through the Direct Release process for their pet(s) to successfully be allowed on island, a process all animals entering the state of Hawaii must go through in order to keep Hawaii Rabies-free. 

The Pet Airport Inspection Specialist is responsible for assisting customers in the process of effective transfer of mainland pets to the state of Hawaii. Comfort around both dogs and cats of all sizes, breeds, and temperaments is vital, as you will be handling all types of dogs and cats during the airport pet inspection process.

This part-time position requires extreme flexibility in availability; the schedule will be given ahead of time, but it might be several flights one week and only 1 or 2 the next, with no “traditional” work hours or set week/weekend days.

Pet Airport Inspection Specialist Qualifications:

  • Valid Hawaii Driver’s license, or valid out-of-state license, with a clear driving record for at least one year prior to application.

  • Airport Security Badge Clearance - Must pass security screening, fingerprinting process, and attend training.

  • Must have reliable transportation to get to and from work. Company vehicles will be used for transfers and access to and from the airport during work hours.

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent is required.

  • One year of experience in animal welfare is strongly preferred.

  • One year of experience working in a client services-related position is required.

Pet Airport Inspection Specialist Essential Job Functions:

  • Must be punctual at all times and able to maintain an irregular schedule from week to week.

  • Greets clients at the airport either at the gate or at baggage claim to inspect the pet.

  • Offers excellent customer service when working with clients, who are often stressed from travel and anxious about their pet.

  • Escorts the pet out of the airport terminal to use the bathroom while the client is completing their exit process.

  • Verifies all necessary paperwork has been completed and collected in order for the animal to leave the airport.

  • Performs basic computer skills using standard office programs such as Word, Excel, Gmail & Google Drive. 

  • Enters data in online databases such as animal shelter management software.

Pet Airport Inspection Specialist Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work with both dogs and cats of varying sizes, breeds, and temperaments.

  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless valid, legal medical exemption documentation is provided.

  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend and stoop frequently and daily to perform duties.

  • Must be able to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances.

  • Must be able to chase or run after animals that might escape confinement.
