Job Summary:

The Manual Machinist III sets up and operates a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining procedures without supervision.  The machinist drills, cuts and shapes items both manually and with machine tools.  The Manual Machinists supports metal working projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection and testing using knowledge of machine functions, metal properties and mathematics. Because mistakes are not easily correctable and have serious consequences, applicants must be able to be highly accurate while meeting strict deadlines.  

 

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Must be able to read blueprints, specifications and technical drawings.
  • Provide calculated dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories or materials onto machines.
  • Select the appropriate tools, machines and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers or grinders.
  • Set up, adjust and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
  • Measure, examine or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications using precision instruments, such as micrometers.
  • Set controls to regulate machining or enter commands to retrieve input or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
  • Have a working relationship with the engineering department, supervisory or manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information.
  • Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency.
  • Clean and lubricate machines, tools and equipment to remove grease, rust, stains and foreign matter.
  • Set controls to regulate machining or enter commands to retrieve input or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
  • Fabricate, assemble or disassemble manufactured products, machines and equipment by hand.
  • Set up and/or operate metalworking, brazing, heat-treating, welding or cutting equipment.
  • Establish work procedures for fabricating new structural products using a variety of metalworking machines.
  • Operate and program computer numerically controlled machines.
  • Understand machine setup instructions.
  • Monitor production machinery/equipment operation to detect problems.
  • Follow statistical process control procedures and adjust production equipment/machinery setup.
  • Assist in identifying and correcting problems.
  • Work as a team member with supervisors and other workers.
  • Contribute to team effort by performing other tasks as assigned.
  • Must have a good work ethic and a willingness to learn.
  • Accomplishes organizational goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufactures instructions, calling for repairs.

 

Maintaining Equipment

  • Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
  • Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining procedures.

Specifications/Qualifications:

  • Experience – 5+ years experience
  • Education – High School diploma or equivalent, and/or Technical Certificate, equivalent job experience will be considered Responsibility – Carry out assigned duties while observing all safety regulations.
  • Complexity of duties – Attention to detail, use of good judgment.
  • Supervision received – requires no supervision
  • Supervision exercised –
    • Direct supervision of Manual Machinist I
    • Minimal supervision of Manual Machinist II
  • Working conditions – Extreme noise, heat, cold, dusty environment, mostly indoors.
  • Mental and physical demands –
    • Must have good hand-eye coordination and vision, good math skills
    • Standing, lifting, pulling, pushing, carrying, speaking, listening, climbing, motor coordination skills, coordination of eyes, hand and feet.
    • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.  
  • Confidential data – Access to intellectual property which must remain confidential and cannot be reproduced.
  • Travel requirements – Under 10%
