Histology Technician - KRH Lab/Pathology/Histology

Performs technical laboratory procedures on patient specimens under the direction of Laboratory Supervisor. Also performs and assists in the quality control of these procedures and preventive maintenance/troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.


  1. *Accurately processes, cuts, and stains blocks of tissue specimens. Stains and labels all slides with accuracy. Accurately and precisely processes all special stains required by the pathologist.
  2. *Performs quality control (QC) as defined in the procedures manual. Documents and reports QC problems to the supervisor.
  3. *Reviews and evaluates test results for accuracy. Follows up appropriately on abnormal or problematic results.
  4. *Prepares reagents, stains, and solutions as necessary for total processing of specimens.
  5. *Assists in inventory of supplies. Keeps supervisor informed of any shortages or new requirements. Prepares fresh reagents when current volume is low. Labels, calibrates, QCs, and documents date when placing reagents in use. Unpacks and stores new reagents correctly.
  6. *Exhibits effective and professional oral and written communication skills. Provides organized legible documentation of test activity.
  7. *Utilizes professional judgment and effective decision making skills. Problem solves, handles difficult situations or changing workflow, and asks for assistance when necessary.
  8. *Maintains properly indexed files, slides, and paraffin blocks and maintains in good useable condition. Maintains proficiency in retrieval of archived blocks, slides, and reports.
  9. *Exhibits competency with computer and continuously strives to update and modify applications that are added to LIS and Meditech systems.

  1. Certification in Histology (ASCP) preferred. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  2. Possess ability to work independently and in an organized and structured manner within and team and/or without direct supervision.
  3. Possess and maintain computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other software as needed.
  4. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, required. Must possess professional communication skills, and work effectively with a diverse customer and coworker population.
