Job Description

Journey Group seeks an Accounting Director/Controller to join our team and be part of the continuous growth that has spread our reputation and business throughout the Midwest.

The Accounting Director will lead and direct the Company's accounting and finance functions by overseeing effective project and change management. The Accounting Director will establish and maintain overall policies, internal controls, and accounting reporting systems.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership aware of Journey Group's financial status.
  • Manage the creation of and monthly monitoring of the yearly budget and quarterly forecasts.
  • Oversee the activities and personnel of the accounting and finance department, such as accounts payable, billings, collections, payroll, and administration.
  • Provide leadership direction, develop, mentor and train direct reports.
  • Evaluate, implement, and streamline policies, procedures, controls, and other methodologies.
  • Monitor and enforce internal control safeguards.
  • Responsible for month-end and year-end close of income statement and balance sheet, account reconciliations and general ledger analysis. Prepare and/or review journal entries as necessary.
  • Ensure all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Handle daily cash management and produce cash-flow reports, calculating cash needs at weekly and monthly intervals.
  • Advance initiatives, such as software and systems implementation and other departmental or firm-wide improvements, as needed, with research, planning and implementation.
  • Keep financial information and plans confidential.
  • Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits and providing information to external auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal taxing requirements.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Flexible in completing tasks beyond formal job description.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, or related field.
  • CPA license preferred, previous experience in public account is highly valued.
  • At least 5 years of increasing responsibility in the accounting, finance, or business administration field preferred.
  • Previous experience in the construction industry would be a plus.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential job duties and responsibilities.
  • Experience working in a dynamic and changing company environment.

  • Ability to read and interpret IRS rules, State Tax Law, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and Financial Accounting Standards Boards (FASB) guidelines.
  • Good working knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet and database programs.

Work Environment

A majority of work takes place in an indoor office setting equipped with a computer, desk, phone and other typical office equipment. Some work occurs in the field and travel to other locations is occasionally required for meetings and trainings.
