Job Description

Are you that special someone who can travel to any state in the United States? This position is a combination of remote and on-site safety management. Under the direction of the Vice President of Construction, the National Safety Manager is directly responsible for managing the safety and risk associated with construction, service and maintenance, compliance projects and overall construction company operations.

The National Safety Manager will proactively plan, direct and implement the Company’s safety program to ensure a safe, healthy and accident-free work environment. The Safety Manager supports the field operations in ensuring each construction/ maintenance project team is conducting operations in a safe manner for the protection of our employees, clients, subcontractors, and the public. The Safety Manager ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, county, and local safety related regulations. The Safety Manager sets the tone for corporate safety and risk management, demonstrates strong leadership skills, works well in a team environment, has excellent communication skills and strives to enrich our Company Culture.

The National Safety Manager is hired by, reports to, and is accountable to the Vice President of Construction, Company Principals, and the Departmental Directors (Service and Maintenance, Compliance, Estimating, and Accounting).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees safety for both office and field operations in ensuring compliance with all aspects of Local and federal OSHA guidelines and site-specific safety plans.
  • Plan and implement risk management, safety policies and procedures in compliance with all federal, state, county and local rules and regulations, including MSDS requirements, for both field and office operations, to maximize a safe working environment.
  • Act as corporate contact for any federal, state or municipal safety or risk management authority and/or personnel, including, but not limited to OSHA and/or DOSH.
  • Record and compile data, update logs, monitor equipment and schedule maintenance.
  • Perform and oversee investigation of accidents, injuries and unsafe working conditions to include interfacing with workers compensation claims and communication with injured workers and the return-to-work strategies.
  • Research and manage ways to reduce the net premium paid by improving the experience modifier.
  • Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with clients and subcontractors.
  • Oversee field safety in ensuring the company and its job sites remain hazard and accident free by conducting periodic safety inspections.
  • Provide recommendations and assistance to Project Managers and Superintendents, with respect to job site hazards, employee training, new/safe equipment operation and safe material or substance utilization.
  • Ensure that contractors, sub-contractors, and consultants are following the safety guidelines set forth by the company.
  • Plan and implement programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, safe equipment operating techniques and fire prevention for job sites and office.
  • Conduct periodic emergency evacuation drills to ensure planning is effective in practice.
  • Provide training and education to all levels of staff, as required, by Federal and State safety regulations.
  • Facilitate employee training in first aid and CPR. Maintain training records in the employee files.
  • Ensure new employees receive safety instructions prior to beginning work. Emphasize any specific site hazards and thoroughly explain all applicable precautions.
  • Perform other duties or special projects in the best interest of the company, or as assigned.
  • Train, evaluate, and discipline all subordinates to the position, in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Conduct all performance evaluations at least semi-annually, and at the end of 90 days for all new personnel reporting to this position.
  • Facilitate in concert with HR early, return to full duty work responsibilities for injured workers and to provide meaningful light duty transitional work opportunities.
  • Research and manage ways to reduce the net premium paid by improving the experience modifier.
  • Remain current on federal, state, county, and local safety regulations. Keep management advised of new or revised regulations and their projected impact.

Education and Certification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety, Sociology, or similar level of knowledge and/or experience.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 15 years Construction/ Service and Maintenance and/or project management experience.
  • Certified in risk management and health/safety management.
  • Thorough knowledge of health and safety laws and guidelines.
  • Extensive attention to detail to distinguish safety hazards.
  • Ability to provide detailed reports and develop safety procedures.
  • Good understanding of data analysis and risk assessment.
  • Good organizational, leadership and motivational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to recognize when safety conditions need improvement.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks especially when handling an accident or incident.
