Job Description General Description of Position: The Lead Veterinary Technician is partially responsible for the day-to-day operations of the overall hospital. The Lead Veterinary Technician is responsible for the veterinary technicians and assistants which support the veterinarians as well as hospital manager. The Lead tech will be in surgery every day and will oversee the surgery prep, the procedure, the patient recovery, filling of medications for that surgical patient, and doing the post-op surgery call to the client. The Lead Veterinary Technician oversees conducting new employee orientations, training, and reviewing for the technician and assistant staff. He/She also oversees pharmacy and medical supply inventory. The Lead Veterinary Technician must be able to accept responsibility, listen to staff, communicate well, and be organized. They must also have good reporting and observational skills to keep the owner and practice manager appraised of the status of the support staff and hospital area. Essential Functions: Human Resources Supervise, train, and evaluate all assistant/technical staff Scheduling of assistant/technical staff Assist in screening, hiring, and interviewing of job applicants for assistant/technical staff Mediate personnel grievances and disputes Assist with the updating of job descriptions for assistant/technical staff Help plan and conduct staff meetings Help train staff on computer system, equipment, and policies and procedures Maintain morale and efficient teamwork Attend management meetings and deliver input from pharmacy/hospital area Plan and conduct monthly veterinary assistant/technician staff meeting Inventory Maintain proper inventory of pharmacy items Maintain proper inventory of medical supplies Take physical inventory as needed Return/replace expired drugs Order all pharmacy items and medical supplies as needed Operations Maintain medical equipment per manufacturer instructions Provide primary assistant support to veterinarians Monitor compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements Perform the duties of the assistant/technician as needed Perform other duties as assigned
