Job Description

Title: Chemist II

Department: Laboratory

Primary Objectives of Position

To efficiently operate lab instruments to ensure quality and integrity of products manufactured.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintains familiarity with the Jarrow Formulas product lines and raw materials (including excipients) used in Manufacturing
  2. Maintains thorough knowledge of analytical techniques used in the Jarrow Labs
  3. Actively utilizes cGMPs to ensure proper handling of dietary supplements in a controlled environment
  4. Takes charge of at least one analytical instrument with in depth operational, maintenance and troubleshooting knowledge
  5. Performs analytical work, in strict accordance with SOPs, in a timely manner and writes reports
  6. Performs preventative maintenance on Lab instruments, machines and apparatuses
  7. Performs literature search for analytical methods, and revises and/or created SOPs
  8. Performs, independently, method verification/transfer and method validation
  9. Properly operates Lab instruments, machines and apparatuses
  10. Properly cleans glassware and other lab ware
  11. Logs incoming samples and records analytical results and other lab work
  12. Tracks and maintains inventory of chemicals, consumable and glassware
  13. Searches catalogues and creates purchase requisitions
  14. Communicates with internal/external clients, outside vendors, and instrument technicians/repairmen
  15. Keeps management apprised of any condition and/or findings that may impact production schedules including any issues for which the customer may need to be contacted
  16. Participates in Lab Group Meetings and in-house/outside trainings to enhance analytical knowledge and productivity
  17. Follows established department SOP's, Company cGMPs, and all instructions, whether verbal or written
  18. Complies with all Company policies and procedures, including safety rules and regulations
  19. Maintains a safe work environment and functions in a safe manner
  20. Performs other duties, job related or otherwise, as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. BS or BA in chemistry or closely related scientific discipline; 2 to 5 years of experience
  2. Experience in a laboratory setting
  3. Experience in food/pharmaceutical/nutraceutical processing operations, FDA regulated industry, or combination of experience, education, and training that provides the level of knowledge, skills, and experience needed to successful perform the job (preferred)
  4. Excellent technical, written, organizational, critical thinking/analytical, problem solving/troubleshooting, and communication/interpersonal skills
  5. Proficient in aseptic techniques, sterilization and safe chemistry and general lab practices (preferred)
  6. Strong computer skills, including keyboarding and working knowledge of MS Office
  7. Strong decision-making skills and a logical approach to resolving job-related challenges
  8. Ability to meet deadlines
  9. Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  10. Ability to maintain a positive, professional, cooperative demeanor
  11. Ability to foster productive working relationship with management, coworkers, vendors and customers
  12. Ability to interpret, comply with, and support Company policies, procedures, work rules, and protocols
  13. Ability to adapt effectively to workplace changes and new job duties/responsibilities
  14. Ability to represent the Company in a positive and professional manner at all times
  15. Ability to stand for extended periods of time (approximately 6-8 hours)
  16. Ability to repeatedly stoop, kneel, reach, stand, and walk throughout an 8-10 hour shift
  17. Ability to lift up to 10 kg (22 lbs.)
  18. Ability to have clarity and sharpness of vision for activities such as preparing data, viewing a computer terminal
  19. Ability to be exposed to considerable noise from machinery
  20. Ability to be exposed to nutraceutical raw materials and powders
  21. Ability to wear PPE as required
