Job Description

JCCA seeks an Assistant General Counsel with a strong background in Human Resources (Employment and Labor Law), Insurance claims, Litigation, and a general interest in the operations of an NYC nonprofit in the Child Welfare and Human Services sector.

In conjunction with and oversight from the General Counsel core duties will include:

  • Support the Human Resources Department in all of its responsibilities, including Employee Relations, Labor Relations – including union negotiations, Policy Development and Drafting, internal investigations, updates on legal changes, and application of current and proposed laws on JCCA operations. (50%)
  • Manage litigation claims on behalf of JCCA, including ensuring timely reporting of claims to appropriate insurance carriers, overseeing and reporting on the progress of current claims, working with outside counsel, initiating litigation holds, and overseeing the production of records with the assistance of a paralegal. (20%)
  • Manage litigation initiated by JCCA and represent JCCA when necessary in legal proceedings, including providing coverage for direct legal services attorneys during their absences. (15%)
  • Assist the General Counsel in other JCCA business and legal matters as needed. (15%)

*Primary Office may be Brooklyn, Bronx or Westchester

Qualifications Required:

  • JD required; Currently licensed to practice law in New York and able to maintain New York law license during JCCA employment;
  • Five or more years’ experience as an attorney, with a substantial combination of knowledge and demonstrated experience in Employment Law, Labor Relations, and general Litigation.
  • Ability to travel for JCCA matters in New York City and to Westchester County.

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Experience with NYC non-profits and non-profit law matters;
  • Experience with the NYC Human Services sector, including NYC procurement rules and contracting requirements;
  • Familiarity with Child Welfare and Family Law matters, including experience with agencies such as the NYC Administration for Children’s Services and NYS Office of Children and Family Services;
  • Experience working with District Council 37;
  • Experience with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion issues, including affecting culture change within organizations.
