Job Description

The Science Writer and Editor develops evidence-based, research-informed content with a focus on health topics such as diabetes, kidney disease, obesity, and behavioral health issues including mental disorders and substance misuse. This position conducts substantive editing and copy editing for content across a range of health communications products and formats, such as toolkits, manuals, fact sheets, radio/video scripts, and web content. The Science Writer/Editor must be able to translate technical and scientific material into concise, engaging content by conducting searches of the scientific literature, identifying relevant sources and vetting evidence presented in those sources, and synthesizing findings into well-organized, actionable content that aligns with the information needs of target audiences including health professionals as well as lay audiences.

This position requires familiarity with structuring and carrying out literature reviews and environmental scans by accessing literature databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, PsycInfo, and similar. The Science Writer and Editor will also develop literature summaries and create annotated bibliographies and logically structured content outlines to support development of communications products. Must be able to produce clear, accurate, well-organized content with minimal instruction or oversight. Frequent collaboration with subject matter experts is expected.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Contribute to the full range of product development activities, including:
    1. Conceptualizing product formats.
    2. Developing concept clearance documentation.
    3. Researching content in medical or scientific journals and other references.
    4. Writing, editing, and reviewing content.
    5. Researching appropriate artwork and images.
    6. Collaborating with graphic designers.
    7. Collaborating with translators.
    8. Identifying and working with in-house and consulting subject matter experts.
    9. Preparing products for various stages of external review, such as field review and federal agency review.
  • Edit complex scientific documents for clarity, grammar, punctuation, spelling, format, and consistency as well as adherence to standard style guides as well as project-specific style requirements and client style guides, and federal plain language requirements.
  • Quality-check text to ensures data is represented accurately and is sufficiently referenced and annotated.
    1. Recommend edits to improve readability, coherence, accuracy, grammar, and conformity to internal and publishing standards of style.
    2. Proactively raise and discuss concerns/issues within the team and with the client to promote high scientific and industry standards and propose alternative wording or strategies.
    3. Work within the content management system and adhere to established version control practices and follows proper review processes
  • Able to work with minimum supervision on new tasks and manage multiple assignments with set deadlines. Able to conceive and implement complex writing/editing projects with minimum supervision and track and report progress of projects.
  • Work independently and with initiative, but also demonstrate strong team/collaboration skills: can engage with a team of talented in-house staff, external SMEs, and government staff.
  • Extensive familiarity in style guides (e.g., APA, AP, AMA Manual of Style, GPO, Chicago) applicable to the specific content area. Capable of taking the lead in updating/maintaining in-house style guides.
    • Assist with proposal development and support for other corporate projects as needed.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS;

Education: B.A. degree or higher in public health, medicine, social work, psychology, psychiatry, or health program administration OR an advanced degree in journalism, communications, or similar field with several years’ experience writing and/or editing evidence-based scientific content for a range of audiences. Other science- and communications-related degrees and advanced licensures/certifications will be considered.

Language: English fluency (oral and written)

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience writing and editing science and evidence-based content, preferably for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or other federal agencies or contracting organizations involved in the health and human services field.
  • Strong history of translating highly technical findings into concise, engaging, and actionable content tailored for specialist as well as non-specialist audiences.
  • Experience writing and editing according to plain-language principles.
  • Experience facilitating field reviews, expert reviews, stakeholder meetings, and similar consensus-based content development exercises.
  • Experience developing substantive literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, and other exercises summarizing and synthesizing a range of research-based publications.
  • Experience documenting and incorporating expert reviewer feedback into draft content.
  • Experience adhering to professional style manuals (e.g., APA, GPO, Chicago).

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of public health, behavioral health, and/or medical and scientific communications and information dissemination.
  • Proven ability to identify, review, and critique topic-specific research literature; grade quality of evidence and strength of recommendations; and synthesize independently, with minimal guidance from content experts.

Skills:

  • Excellent written and editorial skills as applied to scientific and health-related content.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at once while maintaining attention to detail; strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Collaborative skills—can engage with a team of talented in-house staff and external consultants in the development of consensus-based publications.

Software Proficiency:

  • High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience using MS Word styles in document development.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: B.A. degree or higher in public health, medicine, social work, psychology, psychiatry, or health program administration OR an advanced degree in journalism, communications, or similar field with several years’ experience writing and/or editing evidence-based scientific content for a range of audiences. Other science- and communications-related degrees and advanced licensures/certifications will be considered.

Language: English fluency (oral and written); working knowledge of Spanish strongly preferred.
