Salary $80,000 - $120,000

Interplastic Corporation is a specialty chemical company with headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota. They introduced CoREZYN epoxy-based vinyl esters in 1978 and today, they produce the most extensive line of vinyl ester resins in the marketplace. Their full-service product development laboratories are located in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota; Fort Wright, Kentucky; and Hawthorne, California.

Position Summary

The Process Engineer needs to understand the manufacturing processes at the Hawthorne plant and use that understanding to recommend appropriate changes that improve product throughput and quality. Work closely with Plant stakeholders on assigned products, procedures, and technology. Assist in Process Safety Management activities governed under the OSHA 1910.119 Standard.

Reports to: Plant Manager

Essential Functions:

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the chemistry of our polyester products.
  • A strong engineering understanding of heat balance, agitation and mixing technology, process control systems, transfer pumps, analytical equipment, and other processes equipment.
  • Essential problem solving skills developed through the investigation of a problem or process. Apply engineering standards and process knowledge to drive improvement.
  • Knowledge and understanding of PLC programs and equipment.
  • Ability to read, review, and update P&ID’s.
  • Organize Process Safety Information for production equipment.
  • Assist in reviewing and updating Equipment Safety Documents (LOTO)
  • Assist in small capital projects in conjunction with process improvement activities.
  • Hands-on involvement of the corrective action including the developing of an engineering solution, procedural change (under our IS09001.2015) and follow-up to ensure the effectiveness of the change.
  • Cycle time reduction through procedures and technology
  • Plant to Plant Product Consistency through coordination of Work Instructions and Procedures.
  • Procedure and Training program development for the Production Workforce.
  • Determine Root Cause for problem batches, Corrective Actions Required and ensure implementation and success of these Actions.
  • Punctuality and regularity of attendance are job requirements.
  • Follow-through on projects or assignments to completion.
  • The ability to work self-directed and identify problem areas and solutions with minimal guidance
  • The ability to work with different departments within the corporation and engage people on all levels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Management.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Degree in chemistry or chemical engineering.
  • Minimum of 1 year of work experience in a similar position.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of chemical process equipment and technology.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of mixing and materials handling equipment.
  • Willing to "get hands dirty" when troubleshooting plant problems.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt/DOE experience and knowledge is a plus.
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing principles.
