BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC)helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future.IRC teams provide health, infrastructure, learning and economic support to people in 40 countries worldwide. The IRC also provides support to thousands of refugees resettling in 24 U.S. cities each year throughinitial housing assistance; case management and referral services; job readiness and placement; community and cultural orientation; health and wellness programs; immigration services; and youth programs.
Scope of Work : The Advocacy Intern will work with the Advocacy Coordinator to support advocacy, education and government relations initiatives for the office. The intern will assist the coordinator in her/his role to inform and engage IRC staff and volunteers, former IRC clients, community partners and individual IRC supporters to maintain strong collaborative partnerships and effectively leverage community action. This position requires someone who is conscientious, detail oriented, out-going and willing to work as part of a team.
Position Functions :

  • Work with the Executive Director, Advocacy Coordinator and Volunteer and External Relations Coordinator and USP Advocacy staff to follow advocacy priorities
  • Help organize logistics of advocacy events, workshops and meetings with cross sector attendance to facilitate partnership-building and community engagement
  • Assist the coordinator in maintaining an accurate database of supporters, volunteers, elected officials and staff
  • Assist in training community members to advocate on behalf of USP advocacy efforts
  • Work with advocacy coordinator to create and distribute for advocacy alerts and newsletters
  • Coordinate logistics of PR/Messaging Campaigns
  • Assist in drafting letters and outreach materials
  • Other activities related to advocacy and government relations as needed
  • Desire to gain experience in policy advocacy to state or federal elected office holders
  • A desire to deepen your understanding ofthe political process
  • Prior experience with or demonstrated interest in US refugee resettlement
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook programs
  • Experience working with cultural diversity and diverse team
  • Ability to translate complex ideas into widely understandable concepts
